Palladium, please help me with your reasoning.

Why did you use ISO 3200 during the day with good light?

If you look at the EXIF, it was shot at 600mm with f/6.3 (max f/5.6) and 1/800s. So I don't think it was all that bright out ;).

Bingo -

Actually I have the camera set up to pick the iso depending upon the ss when using the TV mode.

The scenes look bright but 5 minutes later there was a storm.

Okay. here are some more results showing that exposing to the right with the same ISO if beneficial.

#1 400ISO exposed properly

#2 1600ISO exposed properly

#3 1600ISO exposed to the right and brough back down

#4 3200ISO exposed to the right and brough back down

all at 100% crops

OK, I've been out of this thread for a day, but I think the Starburst shots are especially helpful. Look closely at the 3200 shot pulled back vs. the 1600 correctly exposed. To my eyes the 3200 is cleaner.

I agree with anyone who says this makes no sense since the non-1D cameras create 3200 by pushing 1600 internally.....but it also matches my own experience. I can't say why exactly, but 3200 pulled back 2/3 stops always looks better to me than 1600 pushed 1/3 stop.

And for sure, 1600 pulled back 2/3 stop is a lot better than 800 pushed 1/3 stop.

JeffreyG and 99, can we ass-u-me that these were shot in RAW?

They actually may be more than 100% crops. I do crops in lightroom and I dont know exactly what a 100% crop looks like. It was a pretty small area that I cropped out though.
