hi. i've just recieved a new 40d. how do i test it? i've heard that you need to take a picture with a cap on and check for something... can someone please tell me more about this?

It happens automatically if the custom function is activated. When you take a long exposure photo, the camera takes a second photo without opening the shutter to get a photo that is just noise. It then uses this to reduce the noise in the actual photo. This can slow down your photography, as if you take a 30 second photo, the camera must take a thirty second exposure for noise reduction. Just take a pic with the body cap on and look at the image. Some noise is normal and depending on the length of exposure and ISO the noise can vary. If a pixel is hot, you’ll see one like a beacon shining away. If you get one, maybe two like this, do the mapping fix listed above. If there are a bunch, you might consider swapping bodies. Not sure why, but call me JJ.
