Hi All,

I am brand new to the world of Digital SLR, well actually I've not even arrived yet as I am still sourcing a cam..!
I have two options presently available,
the Canon 10D and the Canon 300D...
Could you please offer your opinions on which would be the better to go for?
From what I've read..the 10D is older but a more solid body..my assumption is with the newer technology on the 300D it would be a better cam? (pardon my ignorance).. they are both in the region of 6MP..

Thanks,

David

10D is way better user-interface wise.
300D will accept EF-s lenses.

IQ is about the same from what I've seen.

Actually, the 10D and 300D are the same camera on the inside, the 300D just has some features shut off, so tech wise, there is no difference. You can do a search, years ago, someone found a way to hack the 300D with a firmware that unlocked most of the items the 300D had turned off.

That said, like stated above, the 10D does not take EF-S lenses, but does accept all third party digital only lenses.

The 10D is still IMO, the best xxD body Canon ever made, especially with the grip. BTW, I've had the D30, 10D, 20D and 30D and have used the 40D.

The 10D is a LOT more sturdier and well built than the 300D. It's also a physically larger camera - like many, I found the 300D simply far too small (and I don't have particularly large hands for a guy). I might be wrong, but the AF on the 10D is also better. Well, it turns out that I'm wrong! Looking at dpreview's handy comparision tool:

http://www.dpreview.com …d%2Ccanon_eos10d&show=all (external link)

you can see the 10D has an option for adjusting the WB via kelvins, and also goes to ISO 3200. AF is the same for the 2 cameras. The 10D also has a 2 second timer setting, and also mirror lockup (which can be handy).

Hope this helps!

Dave

First welcome to the group David. The quick answer is the 10D. Here is why. I have owned both so I have first hand knowledge. The 300D (Digital Rebel) is a pretty good camera and served me well. With the firmware hack it unlocks a lot but not all of the features that the 10D has. It does have a plastic outer shell. Some had a a problem with that and black models are pretty rare. They were notorious for early shutter failures. I find it interesting that Dave found it to be too small. It's really not much smaller than the 10D. Ok now for the 10D. Built like a tank. It is quite a bit heavier then the DR but not bad. It has a lot more options in the setting menus. Both are slow to turn on, slow to wake up and slow to write. Just the nature of the beast. IQ is great on both but high ISO (>800) is not so good. You would be happy with either but if you have a choice (and it looks like you do) then get the 10D. my $0.0000000000000002 worth

There's no reason to pay actual money for a 300D anymore. Take one if it's free or less than $150 with a lens and had minimal use but otherwise get a 10D or better.

then the 10d would be too small too because the 300d is a full size camera.

the 350d is tiny. the 300d (original d-rebel) isn't. it's full size. i had three of them.

Also the 10D has a prism for its viewfinder the 300D has a mirror therefore the 10D's viewfinder is brighter. The 10D was built in Japan the 300D was built in Taiwan I think, some have thought Japan did better builds, I agree.

Here's a side by side spec comparison.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos300d/ (external link)

Personally I'd go for the 10D due to the build and extra features. FWIW the 300D Rebel is a full size body--same as the 10D.

Here's a picture of the 350D/XT next to the 300D/Rebel, the 300D is noticeably larger

I stand corrected, my apologies Ed! I was positive the 300D was the same size as the 350D!!!

In that case, OP - ignore my comments on size, and concentrate on other things that I (and others) mentioned!

I have owned both and I personally go for the 10D as it has more features. The only thing I do hate about it is the time it a) takes to power on and b) the time it takes to read anything off the CF. I never noticed these issues when I had the 300D although I didn't use it for very long.
