Hand-held is usually best, in my experience...

This is at 1/100. It's very much like shooting, lead in, shoot, follow through in a nice smooth action...

QUOTED IMAGE

Nice shot Pete. I can't handhold the 300 steady and I want to use it.

Panning isn't hard.....start at a nice shutter speed like 1/320 and gradually slow the shutter down....take 10 shots at each shutter speed until you find your comfort zone.

we're shooting motorcycles this weekend....it ought to be interesting...I've never done panning...hope I don't mess it up too much.

there is an art to panning. basic steps to a good pan
1. use a long lens and get as far back as you can this will allow you to move slower than using a short lens from a close distance thus making it easier to get a smooth pan

2. if you can use a mono pod at least to start

3. busy back ground work best lots of spectators is idea as it really ramps up the impression of speed

4. to reduce parallax you need to be shooting as close to a right angle to your self as you can

5. Body posture for hand holding : stand with legs shoulder width apart with feet facing the middle of the ark and twist from the hips

enjoy!

Panning with a monopod can actually be harder than handheld panning...

depends on the ark that your panning threw a corner its great and the reduction it vertical shake is worth it

The problem with trying to pan with a pod is there is seldom any place here without an elevation change as well...so tracking handheld is much easier to accomplish....if you have a nice flat track area...I can see the benefit of a pod.

I'll have to use one...but I have a full size ball head on my mono to deal with the 300. Maybe that will work with the elevation changes...

If the 300 is hard to hand-hold (I wouldn't know), then I'd imagine a loose ball-head tripod might be a better bet than a monopod...

You need a panning belt....you collapse your monopod down...and the base fits in a pocket at waist level....takes the weight off your arms, but lets you smoothly pan...even on uneven terrain.
