Right now I'm using a 650 Watt Photoflex with a 3' Octodome as my primary, and if my buddy comes along he brings his AB 1600's w/ a Beauty Dish.

Ideally I want to be at F16-18 w/ a 4 Stop ND filter. How much juice do you think I'll need? Is it time to get the Zeus 1500-2500?

That's a tall order for any flash I would imagine. Of course it matters on how harsh the sun is at that particular moment and placement of the flash--also the use of light modifiers. Maybe more details?

Heres what I get with my current setup

(2) AB1600 on full power. One has a 22" Beauty Dish and the other has a 20 degree grid 6" reflector. EXIF is in the file. Model was approx 5' from both lights.

Shoot on an overcast day or really early of late ;)

It looks to me like you have plenty of light, but it's not distributed well. The background's pretty dark, if you add more light you'll just have a darker background, which would be worse IMHO.

i agree, i'd also clone out the reflections of light on her chest on that shot.. it's detracts from the shot and leads my eye straight there (not that it's a bad thing, but you get my point )

Before I go to the trouble of calculating what you'll need, can you tell us why you think you need to shoot at that aperture and then block 94% of the light with a filter?

I could drop the ND filter and just stop it down some more, but I don't want IQ to suffer.

Its not for the same particular shot, see photo example above. I plan on doing some desert shoots this summer.

im fairly sure that one light cam right eye level. i think you can acheive this with your photoflex.

also i beleive a ND filter may degrade picture quality too.

Depends on the weather, if its partially overcast and the sun isn't too harsh; no problem. On bright summer days; no way in hell.

then shoot later in the day... i dont think you will be able to acheive the look in that picture with two strobes. or sell yours in favor for one bigger unit.

i would suggest a XL3200. it has a 1/4 power option. so you can you use it as a XL800 when you need less power indoors. i am planning on buying one. and a beauty dish, that shot looks like it was shot with one or a feathered softbox
