. . . can anyone tell me how to attach an umbrella to an Elinchrom D-Lite? I have the 4's and ordered a couple of Lastolite Umbrella Boxes to go with them. The shaft of the umbrella fits fine (7mm), but it only goes in a couple of inches and the design of the box demands that it go in far so you can zip the head up into the box. I can't find my manual for the lights---how do you insert the shaft into the head of the light farther than a couple of inches----I can't see a way just by looking.
Thanks

I don't have D-Lites, but is the set screw far enough out to let the shaft go past it? Look for a knob on the side of the hole that the umbrella goes through. It will be on the part that attaches to the light stand mount. In the pictures on their web site, it is very close to the body of the strobe. Not sure if I am making this clear, but look around. The set screw that holds the umbrella in place sounds like to most likely candidate to me.

Jim--I'll check when I get home from work. Thanks for the heads up. BTW--I used to live in Wichita in the early 80's---Rock Rd. and 21st. It was in the country then.

Hi Jim,

What you're describing does not exist on the D-Lite's. It is a friction mount with no tightening screw. The rod of the umbrella slides into the mount and is snug.

Since I don't own any umbrellas with a 7mm shaft I can't help. I've never inserted an umbrella in to the mount.... wish I had an answer for you.

Is the shaft stopping at the rear of the mount? I'm sure you don't want to force it but have you tried inserting it with a little more force? Also, try inserting it from the rear and see if the same thing happens as it touched the front of the mount or if you can't even insert it from the rear. There may be a shunt or stop of some kind.

OK---finally got it to work. Jim was right---the hole for the umbrella shaft goes through the light stand mount. In good light, you see what looks like two ball bearings on each side of the hole, and you have to force the shaft in. I don't like forcing things, so was too tentative. I'll put up a review of the Lastolite umbrella boxes this weekend when I've had a chance to play with them.

Sounds like Robet was right to me. Glad it worked out.
