I just wanted to let all you very helpful folks that my recently acquired sigma 120-300 did in fact have a mechanical problem with the lens and it wasn't me. ;)

I just got the lens back from sigma. They had to replace the HSM motor, which, I understand, drives the automatic focus. They also adjusted the focus. I was really lucky, inasmuch as the lens is still under warranty and Sigma honored the warranty even though I wasn't the original owner. Sigma service is also very honest. Naturally because I bought the lens used, I didn't think it was still under warranty, so on their checksheet, I said it wasn't under warranty. But they checked the serial number, and did the work under the warranty.

I will be testing it thoroughly at tomorrow's baseball game - this game will be of my southpaw - who's 13 and plays in a travel league. Look for some further pictures and posts from me tomorrow.

I feel very relieved knowing it wasn't me - I thought initially I was going bananas.

:D

I'm not sure of the age of the lens (since I bought it used), and I should ask Sigma how much more time is left on the warranty and the age of the lens just to know those facts. I will email them next week to ask those questions. I was so stunned about them making this repair under warranty, that my brain froze and I forgot to ask those basic questions.

I posted a quick photo taken of with the lens over in the lens section under this thread: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=508188

tomorrow I will take alot of shots of the ball game and post here.

pigtailpat,

I agree 100% about Sigma's support. I have their 50-500mm and had an issue with autofocus. I'm fairly sure I had it long enough that it was out of warranty, but they fixed at no charge anyway. I was pleased, but I was without it for quite a long time and didn't get to use it during peak bald eagle season around my area.
