Hi Gang,

Do you think using the canon prime 85mm 1.2 fully open for a full body shot, (not head shoulders) will kill the shot?

quick and easy question i hope

Thanks

"Full body" arranged how & how far from the camera? Shoot a few tests & see what you get.

Hi Photos guy,
Well pose i would assume would have to be fairly flat , front on considering the DOF issues at 1.2, distance, well basically to get her in the view finder full body, or perhaps above the knee., im guessing ill have to be about 10meters or so back, but great idea... test shots!!, but again thanks for the tip, and anyone else who have some ideas or experience with this lens, id love to hear from you.

Have you looked at the image archive for the 85L? There's a few full body shots there shot wide open. https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=224258

My guess is he wants her completely infocus, I could be wrong though.

If your talking about DOF, then it's just down to the distance from the subject. Focal length itself isn't really an issue.

EOS 6D, 135L, 24-105L, Mamiya RZ67pro2 and lenses

Exactly, im a bit woried that with the narrow of depth of field, i would loose alot of sharpeness, I think if the pose was fairly flat, it might not be an issue, but again would not be such a flatering pose right?

Hi Again,

i had a look at the link for the images taken by the prime 85mm 1.2 telephoto, most of the photos loaded, but there is no full body shots. at the most there was a photo taken by andmy172 that is shot just above the waist. Several of the photos did not load or seem to be removed.

Thanks anyway,

NicholasBB

You do not say what camera you will be using or what size print you will be making, both of which affect DOF. However, with an 85 mm. on a 1.6 crop camera in portrait orientation you will need a distance of about 7 meters for a full length shot. According to http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html (external link) the total DOF will be 0.3m., 0.15m. front and back. Stopping down to f/1.8 would give you better performance from the lens and another 0.15 of DOF.

Thanks for your reply Sir,

Camera type is Canon 40d. For prints I aiming to acheive nice crisp A4 size. Will be shooting RAW and largest file size.

Your comments are an excellent guide which a pretty easy for me to get my head around. I have to be honest, technical aspects realy do confuse me. lol

Anyway, ill battle on, trying to get the best shots i can for the upcoming shoot. I look forward to posting the results for the people who have given me help to see. I am also realy nervous about this too, but ill be ready for honest feedback.

Cheers,

NicholasBB

Why don't you just make it easier on yourself and stop the lens down. At least then you can pose her in ways (yeah, that's plural) that actually make sense and do her body justice.
