Before buying the 1D MK3, I had read a few reviews that said the MK3 had more of a nice, soft rubber finish to it than the MK2 and other Canon cameras which has a harder, almost plastic feel to them.

When I got the MK3, I thought I noticed the same thing, but I didn't have my MK2 anymore to compare. Is it just my imagination, or is this really the case (from anybody with both).

I'm not sure... I must be getting past it!
I'm tempted to go along with Neil and say there's no real difference, but I'm like you, I no longer have the mark II (N in my case) to compare it with.

I can remember it feeling lighter, and a little different, but I'm not sure that softer would describe it.

I've just checked my mk2 and mk3 and unless I've lost my sense of touch they are both the same to me.

Don't they have an optional white finish to match the L glass?

I don't feel the "soft rubber finish" feel you are referring to (both my 1Dmk2 and 1Dmk3 feel the same in terms of harndness/softness). However, the 1Dmk3 definitely does have a much "stickier" feel than the 1Dmk2. The 1Dmk3 stays put in my hand whereas the 1Dmk2 has less of a "stickiness" and feels like it's slipping in my hand, if you know what I mean. I think this is due to the size of the patterns in the embossed on the cover. The 1Dmk3 has smaller patterns than the 1Dmk2 does. Of course, it could also be that the finish of the 1Dmk2 is more worn from years of use because there are areas on the 1Dmk2 where it's stickier than other parts. :)

My 1D feels a little 'harder' my 1DMKIIn and 1DMKIII feel the same. My 1DMKIII may, jut may be a tiny bit thinner, I seem to catch my fingernail more on my MKIIn when dragging gently over the bodies.

Now I'm going for a beer, I should have had one before writing this. :)

Ok, so maybe it was my imagination.
I've read quite a few reviews that have stated the finish of the MK3 to be a softer, more rubbery finish than the MK2, so I guess I'm not the only one who is imagining things. :)

After using its predecessor, the Canon EOS 1D Mark II, the new Mark III immediately feels lighter and more ergonomic although it remains the same sturdy, well built size. The rubber used for the outer casing and surround is different and more "tacky" for better grip (external link).

More tacky I would agree with and but that doesn't necessarily mean softer, though.

Yeah, maybe that's the difference.
