While Canon has pulled away from the competition in terms of lenses, the race to make the best bodies is heating up. The two fornt runners and eternal nemesises (nemesi?) Nikon and Canon are neck and neck. The reason though, that most people choose Nikon over Canon is the quality of their DSLR bodies, and with such high stakes, Canon can't afford to slip up anywhere. So I ask this to you, loyal Canonists: Who else is fed up with Canon's shutter noise? Nikon's is soooo much cooler, from the D40 to the D3 (just assuming about the D3). Canon's is too mechanical and whooshy, not robust and clicky, like real 35mm SLRs. Am I insane, or is there someone else out there who aagrees with me (or both)?

At the end of the day in my eyes glass makes the pictures in terms of clarity. The shutter noise is no big deal and yes you are insane :)

I've held many Nikon Camera's in my hands, except the D3, I wasn't impressed at all and think Canon is WAY ahead of them in this regard as well as the lenses... I think the 40D has a very acceptable shutter noise... Fact is, I don't hear most times but that's me... Yep, I agree.. Your insane..

Where is the survey that says "Most People" choose Nikon over Canon?? And how many Canon's have you owned to say they are whooshy and not robust etc.

Or are you just seeking attention here??

I may be naive, but I don't think Canon's corporate leadership is losing sleep over this stunning reversal of fortune. ;)

As far as the survey goes: the people that I know who use Nikon choose it because they like the bodies more than they like the Canon ones. Canon still has the most users.

And I'd also agree that the 40D's shutter is okay, but all the Rebels are terrible.

It's nemesis and nemeses[1] (external link) and yes, you must be a bit barking to criticise a brand according to the sound of its shutters.

It used to be that Canon's long glass was better than Nikon's long glasss, and Nikon's short glass was better than Canon's. I don't know how long Canon will stay competitive with their glass. Nikon is releasing new versions of their glass that is showing some excellent performance. Nothing Canon has can get close to Nikon's 14-24 f2/.8 and their new 24-70 f/2.8 is much better than the Canon (Accourding to photozone.de who does some very detailed testing).

Nikon is now releasing new versions of their 600mm, 500mm, and 400mm lenses, and if the 14-24 and 24-70 are indications of what is to come, then Canon may not have the best offerings for telephoto.

I think Canon got a bit too complacent in their leadership role, and Nikon went and sucker punched them with this last round of cameras (D300, D3) and lenses (14-24,24-70, 400mm,500mm,600mm). That can only be good for us, as now Canon will have to react. And by reacting, I'm hoping Canon stops focusing on lenses that our out of the normal consumers reach, and starts focusing on lenses most of us can afford rather than putting out $6000 (200mm f/2.0) and $12,000 (800mm f/5.6) lenses

I could give a flippin' rat's ass about shutter sounds or who's ahead in some alleged race. My equipment produces stunning photos and from what I have seen, much better IQ than any other brand.

That's the only race I am interested in.

I don't know how to truly interpret the photozone tests when comparing a Canon lens and Nikon equivalent. A lot of the Nikon lens tests are based on a D200 vs a 350d for Canon. I wonder how the results would change with a 30d or 40d.

I'm still not sure one company has trumped the other relative to consumer friendliness and bang for buck. The two lenses you referenced Nikon 14-24 and 24-70 are listing for $1589 and $1700 respectively. Hell, this normal consumer can't afford that, but I can afford some of Canon's L offerings. At the end of the day people are going to buy the best equipment their money can buy...Nikon or Canon.

I'm glad we have competition between the two. With the last round of Nikon intorductions, it's simply a matter of time before Canon responds. I don't get too crazy over digital bodies since they have a relatively short life span. Just happy with what I have and looking forward to new Canon introductions.

I agree. But, I like the sound of my shutter. It sounds like a shutter.

My mkIII sounds cool....errr, cooler than some other things that make a clicking noise. Although I once owned a .357 magnum that made a cool clicking noise, but I couldn't take pictures with it.

In reality, the sound of the shutter is nearly the very last thing I think about when taking a picture if I even think about it. My mkIII is built like a tank, you could use it as a hammer. From what I've seen the last few bodies 40D, xsi, mkIII have had very good build quality.
As far as glass goes, Canon makes better....or....more primes but the zooms are leaning in Nikons corner these days. The 14-24, 24-70, 70-200VR combo trumps ours.
I'm a prime shooter mostly so I shoot Canon.....If I was a zoom guy I'd be shooting Nikon right now.
Cheers
