The mk 3 DOES make a distinctive sound. Similar to, but somewhat quieter than racking a shotgun

The MKIII shutter is cooler than any other DSLR out there... when it is firing at 10fps. Now that is a cool sound, I have to admit.

just checking up on the thread, and people had a lot to say. I hope everyone knows that I don't consider cameras because of their shutter sounds, that's like buying a car because of its cupholders, this is just one thing I noticed and was wondering if anyone else shared my opinion

to be honest i don't know how a nikon sounds. i've been around a few but the sound must not have been different enough for me to remember but most likely it just isn't something i trip on.

as far as i'm concerned nikon does not even exist. there's nothing they make that even remotely appeals to me over the options that i have with canon.

oh, the 1d mark III has a "silent" mode that i use indoors at times but i would be lying if i said i didn't love the attention-getting clack of a 20d shutter :D.

The shutter noise from my XTi has been ruining the quality of my shots for longer than I care to remember and I, for one, am sick of it. My wife still says it's because I lack talent but what the hell does she know ;-)a

Crazy.
I think the quality of my shots is ruining the sound of my shutter.

I could give a flippin' rat's ass about shutter sounds or who's ahead in some alleged race. My equipment produces stunning photos and from what I have seen, much better IQ than any other brand.

That's the only race I am interested in.

I just wish mine would produce stunning photos... for me.

I with ya, I could care less who is ahead or where. I have seen some excellent work with just about any camera.

Oh BTW I want a noctilux can any youse Euro dudes lend a yank 10000 Euros.
purty pwesse?

EDIT: Actually the OP may have somewhat of a point, but for all SLR's. During the President Regean's funeral, the cameras allowed to photograph the family at the casket side were so loud it was a major distraction for the viewer. There have been a few times, like in a church when I wished my camera was alot more quiet. But that was more with my MF gear.

Funny thing is, I could write this post from the opposite perspective?

Actually, I think that the shutter sound DOES matter. I definitely prefer a quieter shutter to a louder shutter.

However, I think you cannot simply equate all Canon DSLRs (for example, compare a 10D to a 20D), just as you cannot simply equate all Nikon DSLRs (for example a D70 compared to a D200).

Both Canon and Nikon have some models that are louder/clunkier than others. The variation within each brand is much more than the variation across brands (taking the range of sounds as a whole).

Competition is good. I am so glad there is a dark lord Nikon to my beloved Canon. :-)

Lol. Seriously tho.

Loyalty is a funny thing. It creates all sorts of kooky biased complaints and criticisms that mean little to most, but become vastly important for whatever reason to the loyalist.

Like shutter noise. Who cares? Personally I don't. But Apparently this guy does.

Actually, after reading this post, I went to youtube and compared the shutter sounds of the nikon D300 and the canon 40D. Being a biased Canonite, it was no surprise that I found myself preferring the Canon's shutter sound. Lol. Honestly. I thought the Nikon had an annoyingly higher pitch. Lol. But really.

Maybe if I was a loyal Nikon lover, I could learn to love it, much like how you're willing to overlook a woman with a high pitched voice that can shatter glass...but that grows on you. Fran Drescher anyone? Lol. Who cares?

I have my own eccentric reasons for preferring Canon over Nikon. And I also have some valid reasons I think are important. But It's a very personal love affair. Full of passions and compromises...AND excuses.

Because like in any love affair, Canon will do some things that piss me off on occassion too.

But at the end of the day, I am a loyal Canonite...so i overlook them. Much like you'd overlook the imperfections of a loved one. It's just the way it is. :-)

That being said, I am patiently waiting for Canon to update the 5D. Not that I find the D3 sexier, but...I am human...and I do notice these things. But I love Canon, and when the 5D turns to me and says, "Do I look fat in this dress?"....I without blinking immediately reply..."No honey, you look sexy as ever!" ....um...even tho I am secretly thinking it could lose a few pounds. heh heh heh.

What can I say? I'm in love with Canon. Nikon may have stolen alittle thunder lately...but thats a good thing! It'll get Canon back into that gym so it can squeeze into that sexy dress and turn everyone's head back again.

And they will. :-)

In the meantime, I will get the 40D with the cash rebate and start shooting.

Shutter noise?

To be completely honest, I don't have a clue what my 30D sounds like - for me photography is a visual art.

On the other hand, when I play the piano, I am really conscious of the sounds it's making, and I don't seem to notice what colour it is.;)

Am I not paying enough attention?

Who else is fed up with Canon's shutter noise? Nikon's is soooo much cooler, from the D40 to the D3 (just assuming about the D3).

When I took a local newspaper's Nikon D1x home to trouble-shoot it and clicked the button for the first time, I thought the mirror and/or shutter was futzed. I don't consider that to be a reassuring sound.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)
