I think Canon got a bit too complacent in their leadership role, and Nikon went and sucker punched them with this last round of cameras (D300, D3) and lenses (14-24,24-70, 400mm,500mm,600mm). That can only be good for us, as now Canon will have to react.

+1, exactly my thoughts on the matter

Actually they will of course but there is no need to hurry. They do sell a crap load more than the others....

Canon has a huge worldwide market share in several business areas.

I switched to Nikon because I didn't like the shutter sound of my Canon.

Funny...really funny!:lol::rolleyes::lol:

I should sell all my gear and go back to a P&S because unlike the DSLR, it actually has a feature that can turn off the fake shutter sound. Impressive...most impressive.:D

While Canon has pulled away from the competition in terms of lenses, the race to make the best bodies is heating up. The two fornt runners and eternal nemesises (nemesi?) Nikon and Canon are neck and neck. The reason though, that most people choose Nikon over Canon is the quality of their DSLR bodies, and with such high stakes, Canon can't afford to slip up anywhere. So I ask this to you, loyal Canonists: Who else is fed up with Canon's shutter noise? Nikon's is soooo much cooler, from the D40 to the D3 (just assuming about the D3). Canon's is too mechanical and whooshy, not robust and clicky, like real 35mm SLRs. Am I insane, or is there someone else out there who aagrees with me (or both)?

You think a race of best camera manufacturer is going to be based on a shutter noise? :lol:

You say its too mechanical, what bodies are you talking about here? My 400D sounded a bit more up to date and so it was a lot of "clunky" and more mechanical but my 5D has a distinct clunk. Does it affect the IQ or the performance of the camera? People don't buy any DSLR because of the mechanical noises it makes. Well if they do, I am worried.

I kind of understand what he is saying about shutter sound. Not that it would have ANY impact on what I chose to buy, but if it were strictly a comparison on shutter sounds (why you would do this I dont know) I too would pick Nikon. To me it just sounds cooler, but again 0% of my decision would be made on that. On a side note, the 40D is pretty close to what the Nikon's sound like.

I wouldn't say Canon shutter noise is bad. But it's true that shutter noise of 1d and 1dmk2 was nicer then the one from 1dmk3. And I definitely agree that shutter noise of 5d,40/30/20/10d, 400d... is not nice to hear. But when it comes to all that... does it really matter what kinda noise camera makes?

In a word.... yes. I really want a silent mode. I was shooting a horse event last week and more than once my camera was loud enough to draw the attention of the rider (and perhaps the horse). I really don't care that I get looks - because I have a job to do. But I am there to capture the event, not impact it. There are plenty of events where camera noise noticably takes away from the event. And in a few cases, shutter noise is totally and completely unappropriate. So yes, I want a much more silent camera. The shutter slap of the 20/30/40d is was too loud. The latter versions are better, but not enough.

Luckily I don't shoot stuff where this would matter, and that's reason I totally forgot about this. But 1 series have silent mode. It's still not silent, and it works only in single shoot, but it's lot more silent then normal one.

Aw come 'on you know that you want your 5DMkIIIn to download either the "eagle screech" (that is not really an eagle) or a silenced machine pistol:rolleyes:;)

My old cell phone's camera could quack when you took a picture :D

My Canon allows me to go into stealth (silent) mode. If it weren't for my big long hard glass, you wouldn't even see me.
