Okay, I am new. I see the cannon ring and twin flashes, and then I see the phoenix and sunpak and others at a third of the cost. I am not a big flash fan, always opting for faster glass and reflectors and natural light whenever possible, so I don't know a whole lot about them. But I can see that I need a macro light and that I can spend as little or as much as I want to on one. So I ask you that know, where do I get on the bus and where do I get off?

How about $14.95? I have been using one like this for years with both my A80 and DSLR.

Use the camera's flash to trigger the slave. Adjust slave flash position, the aperture, and/or ISO for proper exposure.

If you already have a 550ex or 580ex flash...

If you already have a 550ex or 580ex flash you just need a bracket, an off camera flash cord and a diffuser.

I use a old Siegelite flash bracket which can be adjusted to many positions. The Siegelite can be often found on eBay for less than $25. There is one on eBay right now going for $9.50 with a little over an hour left in the auction.

I diffuse my flash with an old Lumequest softbox left over from my film shooting days. The softbox can be fabricated from foamcore board and some diffusionmaterial.

i did the bracket thing for a while and it just got too cumbersome. If you can swing it, get the best...MT-24EX.

yeah, I see there is a wide variety of flashes and also a wide variety of advice about flashes. I currently have the 5d, so I can fire a hot shoe or corded flash, but slaves will require me to at least load some kind of a mini flash unit on the shoe. right now I am hand holding a canon 220 and wishing I had a more convenient and consistent method. I know a ring flash can leave ring highlights on shiny bugs, but the convenience and consistency would be worth the trouble of having to also remote fire a fill of some kind on ocassion. There is no apparant easy way to do it all, but it seems to me that a cheap ring light will do it easily and be adequate for most situations and easily compensated for in the rest of the problem shots. Do you agree or am I shooting with the cap on?

What about the Digi-Slave L-Ring 3200?
Not exactly cheap at $269 but offers continuous or flash modes and an optional power supply (wall wart) is available.

thanks for all good advice. as I learn more I hope to be able to contribute more to this site, for now I am just grateful to everyone for all the help. thanks especially for the links to more info, saves me from sifting through all the results of a search for the really usable stuff. probably going to buy rather than build, probably going to go cheap rather than canon. Still looking and reading.

Here is a quick shot of my macro setup. Before I pickup up a second 580 EX I was using a single 580 with a piece of reflective foam board on the opposite arm.

You don't take a photograph. You ask, quietly, to borrow it.

I have only used my ringlight 2-3 times. I bought it used (eBay) for $50. I also wanted to spend very little on something I didn't think I would use much. This ringlight from B&H is like what I have. http://www.bhphotovideo.com …000_Macro_Ring_Flash.html (external link)
