Hey everyone;

I am super interested in this lens for Car shows and the sometimes low light that comes with them. I decided against the 17-40L F4 because I need a lens that can grab more light. Also if this is going to be my perm Car show, parts and people lens I want to use the best I can get.

I have been drooling over the pictures here https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=411156 which has made me really want this lens.

So if anyone out there has the 16-35mm F2.8 II L doing some motorsports shooting or car show shooting I would love to see the pictures!

Thanks everyone

-Eric-

Great pictures, thanks :)

Were you using the I or the II version?

It seems like there is a lot of distortion on the Toyota's bumper shot, I have seen that a lot in the version I.

What focal length were you at? Any Exif data?

Thanks

Totally normal for a wide lens that close up.

How far away do you suggest shooting as to keep distortion to a minimal?
I need to make sure the pictures are life like :)

Also what focal range could be best to keep that distortion down?

Thanks :D

Here's a quick shot I took the other day. No thought was put into it, I just held the camera low and clicked. Car was dirty....

Now I like that picture, nice even lines.
On my 40D that would be 36.8mm (25.6-56mm after 1.6x conversion)so I would have to step back a little I guess, if I am to understand how to use this lens correctly.

Here's one from today. Just put it up in the Vancouver thread in the Urban section. There's a bunch of cars posted in there but I'm not sure what lens was used. Everything I've posted tonight and over the next few days was with the 16-35. Same with The Hoff's stuff.

I have shots on my 40D with this lens. Not sure if there's any car ones though. I'll take a look tomorrow for you.

The II

I think that all four were taken at 16mm on a 5D. And of course, at that length, you are getting very close to the subject.

If you take the URL for any of the pictures above, look for "400" and replace it with "full", then you should be able to download the full resolution version, with the Exif embedded.

I've done a fair share of shooting car shows, and have found my favorite range to be the 24-105 on a full-frame camera. Anything wider than 24mm, and the cars became too distorted. I also liked to have the additional reach of the tele-end for isolating detail shots of cars, and capturing portraits of models.

On a crop camera, I would consider the 17-55IS lens. The 16-35 won't give you sufficient reach, and it also lacks the IS, which can really come in handy when shooting indoors.

I shot the image below with the 5D and 24-105L lens at 35mm, 1600 ISO, f/11, 1/50'.

As for motorsports, you're going to need at least a 70-200 telezoom, unless you are going to have media credentials that can get you right up near the action.

Damn! Those are fine fine pictures. Btw the GT is my ultimate car (Cause I dont have enough for an Enzo :P Shoot I dont have the $145k for a GT LMFAO!)

I agree on getting a longer lens too, though I wanted to start off with the 16-35mm because of the awesome landscapes I have seen with it, but then again I didnt mention that earlier :D

Work wise this is what I am looking at. I like the 24-105L also, great lens, probably my next after this.

I want to try and fill all my gaps for the car scene, from Shows to racing.
I already have a 70-200mm 2.8 IS on the way. After the 16-35mm I need to fill that 35-70mm gap and I think the 24-105L would do that very well, though I have not stopped on that one yet.

As for long reach, if I must I will get a 100-400mm next spring, though I hope they release and updated version soon. For now a 1.4x tc will work just fine. On my 40D thats a reach of 156.8-448mm @ f3.8 (Everyone says f4 though but canon says the tc is only 1 fstop.)
