Good afternoon everyone..

I got to thinking today (I know scary thought) I would like to know who here are professionals or trying to work their way there.. I love all the people that post here but I would like to know who does this as a business. So I would like to start this thread.. Since this is a photo sharing section it is only right that we share photo's..

So I would like to share the following info.

1. Name if business if you have a name yet? Share your website if you like.
2. How long have you been in business?
3. How long after you "really" started learning photography did you start your biz
4. I think is the most important question. If you could share 1 piece of advice for those who want to start their own business what would it be??
5. If you could share 1 photo as being your favorite what would it be..

Since I am starting this I will go first and I hope that other pro's will follow suit.. (PLEASE!!!!!!)

1. Life's Moments by Heather (www.heathers-photography.blogspot.com (external link)) It will be changing soon
2. I am not in business yet. My goal is to be up and running full force on Sept. 1st
3. I got my camera in April 2007 but didn't start really using it till Sept. 2007. So if all goes as planned it will be 12 months but the learning never stops.
4. Connect with other photographers that are better then you and learn from them. They have been through the up's and down's and can teach you things that you really need to know to be a successful photographer.. I want to thank those of you that have helped me. You will always be appreciated..

5.

1. On wish prints
2. 18 years
3. It was more difficult, i sold my first pic already as a kid and freelanced ever since. Business as it is now at about 1999.
4. Dedicate your self to something you really like. Doesnt matter if you are good at it or not. Focus on it and work on your self to improve while keeping your style. Spend time and resources promoting your business also in real world, that is where most photo moneys comes from, not Internet.
Ignore people who puts you down and have nothing to prove their skills (there is most of them), listen from those who are successfull (that only matters). But. Still keep in mind that your customers are people, not photographers. Photographers rarely buys photos from somebody else. That is why it is important to market your self to your customers.
Do not try to change your self to get more popular doing things which are not as you want them. It is rarely successfull conversion.
Forget stock images sites, waste of time and downs your name.
5. That would be many

1. About Moments Photography (new website still being developed, http://www.aboutmoments.com (external link))
2. I've been shooting for pay for the last 4 years, but have sold prints for the last 9 years.
3. I picked up my first film camera, an ancient Minolta, when I was 12 years old, sold my first print for $5 to a newspaper when I was 14. Started business when I was 38.
4. Never, Never give up. Don't worry about someone criticizing your work, it's just their opinion! As a good friend of mine once said "Success is the progressive realization of a worthwhile dream!"
5. Taken with my first digital camera, a Sony Mavica FD95

1. I just got a Canada Post "Venture One" card to save on shipping, for the buisiness name I put "Dstanic Photography". So for now that's what I'll call it until I can come up with a better name.
2. (As quoted above) No business yet still have a lots to learn before I take the plunge.
3. I also got my camera last xmas, and learning. I'm hoping by next year I'll be good enough to be a wedding photographer assistant or something.
4. Always try new things, never give up on trying to be good at shooting something. There are others better than you, but you are better than them at something as well (gotta keep positive on those bad days!).
5. This is one of my favs. It's my friend buying his engagement ring (I took shots in the store) and it's the closest to a "pro wedding photographer" type of picture so far. I have lots of great pics of my cats but who cares about that.

1. Alan Myers, Photographer.
2. Going on 7 years in business.
3. I started making photos as a serious amateur about 30 years ago.
4. Advice... sorry... can't keep to just one point:

Keep your mind open and keep learning. If I ever stop learning and expanding myself, someone please take me out back and put me out of my misery.

There are always new opportunities, if you just allow yourself to see them.

Constantly strive to become the very best at your specialization.

Speaking of which, specialization is very important, but keep your eye on the big picture anyway. And don't be afraid to change directions or try something new. Too much specialization for too long can easily turn into a bad thing... a rut.

The attitude you bring to your work will show to everyone around you all the time: If you are positive, upbeat and solution-oriented, they will know it. If you aren't... well, they will realize that too. How you approach things shows in your writing, conversations, even in the way you react unconsciously.

More face-to-face and telephone conversations, less email and texting.

Challenge yourself every chance you get. That can be to try something new, or to do something you do every day, but do it differently. Don't be afraid to take on a project that you aren't sure you are capable of... stretch yourself and your capabilites.

Always give your customers more and better than they expected. It's far better to surprise each and every customer with an unexpected bonus, than to cut your prices to the bone in hopes of gaining new business. Referrals will always be the best business you will get, so be sure you earn them on every job.

People who think they know it all don't. We're be lucky if we reach the point where we have a clearer picture of just how much we don't know.

You are your own toughest competition. People get in their own way, talk themselves out of trying things and think they can't do things. I bet far more fail for these reasons, than are "beaten by the competition".

Make a list of highly successful people... Now try to get a copy of any autobiographies about them and read. I think you will find a common thread in all of them.... Successful people fail far more often than they succeed, but they keep on trying anyway. That's why they succeed in the end.

Be very wary of anyone who says "forget about" anything. That means one of three things: They've never tried it, but have formed a strong opinion anyway. They've tried it, sort of, and failed. Or, they are wildly successful at it and trying to steer you away from "their little secret".

Leverage your work. In other words, if you shoot events and sell prints, also get releases so you can sell stock. If you travel to a location to shoot, be sure to let all your customers know well in advance in case they need photos from the same location. Tis better to have two, or three assignments tied to a trip, than a single one. If you have a pile of photos from previous jobs, go through them on a rainy evening when you have time and pick out a half dozen to sell as fine art. Or put together a book.

I could go on, but to wrap this up...

Believe 25% of what you read on blogs and the Internet. Maybe only 15%. Problem is, which 15-25% can you believe, and which 75-85% should you distrust?

Finally, spend half as much time blogging, twice as much time prospecting for new customers.

5. I have hundreds of favorite photos. Can't choose just one.

1. Stephen Faust Photography, http://www.StephenFaust.com (external link)
2. 15+ years video & some photography, ~4yrs photography as main service
3. About 10yrs as an amateur before I started charging for my services.
4. Its a business. Spend at least as much time studying how to run a business as you do learning f-stops, composition, and photography. The business knowledge will do more for your success than learning the latest greatest techniques.
5. I have a lot of favorites, but I decided to post this one since it also includes my daughter, who trumps any of my favorite images ;)

3. Uff... I have been shooting for fun for 15 years or so, before I even started to think about earning money with it.
4. Respect you own time and money.
5. Otherwise it's way too many photos I like, but in last half year, I would take this one. It's far from best photo, but I like it because of story behind this photo.

4. My advice would be to take advice from those who have been through whatever you are going through at the time, and I mean really listen and take it in, don't just hear it then shrug it off. And never ever think you are done learning! Photography is constantly changing, and you have to change with it, because customers know what is out there, and they want the latest and greatest, but always in a timeless way.
5. My favorite photo, oh gosh...not sure it's really this one, but this one still always grabs me:

I love that! I think I am going to print this quote and put it into my wallet. I will pull it out everytime I start putting myself down. Photography is my passion! Now I have a quote to go with it. Mind if I use it?
