I'm curious to know if just buying the ball head part would just screw into my existing non ball head tripod? Any suggestions? Nobody can answer that without knowing precisely what you have. Take a look at your tripod and see if it looks like the pan/tilt head is held on with a bolt. You'll need to be able to unscrew the existing head in order to attach the new head.
