I am releatively new to the forum, been lruking for a while as i do research into different cameras, but I need advice!

A little background. I am upgrading from an old (very old!) Canon A70 (3.5 MP 3x zoom). This camera was a dream for me, lasted forever took lovely shots but unfortunately it has been through a lot and has finally reached its end. I typically take pictures of my nephew, indoors. But I also do quite a bit of landscape photos.. and outdoorsy people photos. I also like to take random photos of things I find pleasing to my eye. I definitely want an upgrade from the 3x zoom, sticking with AA batteries.. And I would like to make the switch to SD memory cards (my A70 took CF cards).

I had done some looking and decided originally that the Canon S5IS looked mighty good for what I wanted. Not quite an SLR... more features than a compact. Now the Canon A720 looks rather appealing from reviews I have read. Comact.. good pictures, features to grow with. It doesn't have a huge zoom.. like the S5 but really, anything would be an improvement over the 3x zoom I have been using for the last handful of years. The Canon A650 also looks lovely. It has the rotating LCD like the S5 compact like the 720. THEN I discovered the Canon SX100. Big zoom, more compact than the S5.

So I'm stuck. Are there going to be any notable picture quality differences between the A720,A650,SX100 and the S5? If i can get the S5 package in the Sx100 I can pretty much right it off. I am not so concerned with MP... I do like zoom (like a moth to the flame) but if the A720 or the A650 will give me better picture quality.. I would definitely choose that over the Zoom. and then the A720 vs A650!

Am I really comparing apples to oranges here? I have been debating and pondering for about a month now. I am tired, and I am just getting more and more confused/frustrated.. I need help. please help!

Well, the A720, S5 and SX100 all use essentially the same sensor and electronics; the differences are in lens, viewfinder, and other stuff like that. The A650 has a larger sensor to go along with the extra pixels, so each sensor site will be a bit bigger and theoretically less noisy. If you're willing to carry the bulk of the S5, I'd suggest that; my preference among the others would be for the A650 for the fold-out screen especially.
