Keep in mind that I am a rank beginner, but my personal tastes lean toward the black background. It provides a nice contrast with the red and brings out the water droplets. As for the the dishes, I would say that it would depend on the overall color of the dish. A lighter colored entree would wash out with a very light background. IMHO.

Well, for claiming to be a rank beginner you do have good advice. I wouldn't have written it any other way, not like I am anything close to being professional.

yes, yes, yes. i love this shot.

don't get me wrong, i like some of the others as well. i just happen to harder struck by the subject in this one.

thanks for posting! :)

p.s.
i would suggest practicing composition diligently. set up some still-lifes (w/"rule of thirds") even if you don't intend to shoot them! although i see little point in not doing so after having set them up, so snap a few off and post some more!

Mmmm I think the last 2 are over exposed. The highlights are way washed out. Id say back it down at least 1/2 stop. Your presentation is excellent though. Dont change that at all!

This set is perfect!! The colors may be a bit reduced. But I cant see the real stuff, so it may be OK. I might push the colors a bit anyway. I love the idea of the upside down plate!!

Only other thing is on the table setting. If you are going to show that much of the plate.... show it all. Don't cut off the edges

thank you but im not so happy with the lighting.......flash is very hard. what you mean colors reduced, you mean they should be a bit less saaturated? maybe i misnderstand, but on flickr and here i must admit they look way red then on my screen using aperture.

table setting dont crop the plates, point well taken!

the upside down plate is not upside down, just a deep plate with wide rim and the rim leans down on the sides......great for presentations, and almost looks like an UFO here against the black

Lovely! I agree with the cropping though...show the entire plate.or go very close in.no dark corners showing...watch as well for some slight nicking of the food itself in crops...

Some slight contrast would be helpful( just me) in creating a more defined subject.

He means the same as the plate. Croping out just a tiny bit of the food. like this at the bottom...The tomato is ever so slightly cut off.
