Some nice shots and a small review.

I'm quite excited about this lens,

hope it's good (maybe even better than 120-400mm?? :D )

actually the lens looks EXACTLY like the 120-400mm with a 1.25X teleconverter glued on the front...in fact, the FLs and F stops are exactly the same, only multiplied by 1.25...

hope the IQ is better...

I must be really poor at math, but I'm unable to follow your reasoning. Multiplying 5.6 with 1.25 gives me the result 7, which is quite different from 6.3

As far as I know the 120-400 uses 77mm filters, while the 150-500 requires 86mm ...

Rest assured it won't. Sigma is not the salvation army, and if their glass was that good they wouldn't sell it for half the price of the 100-400 ...

Those test samples seemed rather good.

I had guessed that it was an improved version of the 170-500 with added OS

I think those samples are hard to draw conclusions from because they appear to have been post processed. I was interested in this lens for awhile, but then I read some Sigma 50-500mm technical reviews and figured a Canon prime is worth the extra money in IQ. Still those images don't look bad.

Does anyone know if Sigma is claiming any earth-shattering technical advancements or new technologies or glass with these newest lenses?

It's the first time you get Sigma glass with HSM and OS .... that's worth something. Especially since the Canon glass in this range (300L, 100-400L) has old IS version (and please no flamewar here, that you can handhold 1/20 second with the 300L, that's not the point here)

I have no experience with the 100-400L but I am sure the high cost of the Canon L lenses is not due to quality alone - there is a premium pricing on the brand name as well as the "perception" of higher quality. I am sure, if we take costs in to account, Canon is fleecing the market with its L lenses.

Having said that, the price of the 100-400L might be well worth it when compared to the quality of other lenses like the Sigmas - but this is debatable. What I dont agree with is equating high price for quality or dissing a product just becos its priced lower

Thanks for the link V8,
The shots aren't very impressive. (Lots of CA and soft at edges)
The only good image is the pigeon.

I'm going to wait for real reviews as I'm considering replacing my 100-400. Looking at those pics I don't think its going to happen.

oops, I lied...

i guess the aperture doesn't work that way and your also right about the filter size...

but the FLs do!! ;)

Looks like B&H (external link) has it in stock now, too.
