I use the XTI, and just traded my bigma for it,but the copy i got doesnt seem to lock the focus if you zoom out past 150mm. Have to focus manually if not at 150mm. Other than that everything else looks good.

Something ain't right with that. It should lock focus all the way to 500mm.

IIRC, the min. focus distance increases as you zoom out to 500mm by a few feet, so if you are at the min. focus distance at 150mm and zoom out to 500mm, you will be at a shorter distance than the MFD for 500mm, in which focus cannot be obtained.

BTW Jojo, sent you an e-mail about my bigma vs 400mm L again.

I just got the lens today and am putting a page together on it here http://www.pbase.com/lightrules/bigmos (external link) . I need a little more time with it, but at least the page is set up for my thoughts forthcoming shortly.

Excellent initial review of the "BigmOS"

I agree.

I keep going back and forth between the 50-500 and the 150-500. The first shots I saw of the 150-500 were awful but lately I've seen some really good ones. After seeing this test I think I'm about to pull the trigger on the BigmOS...........I think.

I had a very good copy of the Bigma and now a very good copy of the 150-500mm OS. I would rather the latter as it has too many benefits over the non-OS lens. It really is a Bigma with OS.

yeah, if I was going to test a 500mm OS or IS lens I would definately turn IS/OS off and shoot 1/25 ... and then post results and later say the lens is faulty. Man, that thread has more clowns in it than a Circus ;-)a

:D I'm going to put off buying any lens for awhile. I need to pick up a 2.8 lens, maybe the 70-200mm, So a long lens might have to wait awhile longer.

Exactly my sentiments. I loved my Bigma and had an outstanding copy but sold it to get the Canon 100-400L IS, bad mistake. Was terribly dissapointed with the results I got from the Canon, BUT now got used to IS. Was torn apart in indecision about buying the 150-500OS, especially as winter here, so income down a lot, but happy so far.

well here i go again trying to upload the right picture this time. Well I exchanged my faulty 150-500 for one that will focus at all the zoom ranges.Really like the lens been trying to get out and use it much as I can. Went out to the lake this morning and the weather was ok, kinda cloudy, but it was a chance to use the OS. I just wish I would tried a lower angle to get some of the shots I got, but here is a one that kinda like. he was kind of pissed off at some other geese.

I bought this lens last week with great expectations. I can tell you that my Canon 70-200 f4 IS with a Tamron 1.4 SP TC (280mm) is a bit sharper than the Sigma @280mm. Not by much but a bit. Maybe I have been reading to many forums where people say native glass is always better. Anyway there is definitely a difference in color and slight sharpness between the two. When I crop the Canon + TC to 160% and compare it to the Sigma at 500mm there seems to be little difference, except the saturation. I'm still not sure if I will return the Sigma. Damn I read to much about bad copies I don't know if the Sigma is at it's full potential.

There's more to photography than sharpness ... different lens images do look different and it doesn't really matter ... who cares about pixel peepin' 160% crops, really? Shoot the bloody thing in good conditions, watch the quality of light, RAW, decent RAW processor, decent PP and then decide. You need 500mm? You need flexibility? You need OS? Then spend for the 500mm IS L 4.0 :lol: Otherwise get real. You're comparing one of the very best lenses money can buy, the 70-200mm IS L 4.0 which takes a TCon very well, with 150-500mm OS at around the same price. Don't expect miracles. See it for what it is. great IQ when used well and at a crazy price.

Has anybody attempted to shoot sports of any kind yet? It would be nice to see how well, if at all, this lens does with fast action.
