Those are 100% crops!?!?! (You didn't resize?)
They must have been very small in frame.
They look good but hard to tell at that size.

No I didn't resize (using Image -> Image Size!!).

Is there any other way to get a 100% crop from the RAW ?

Cheers,
Girish

Those are resized, the heads are the same size as your originals, just cropped before being resized.

Here is how to get a 100% crop from a RAW file using DPP.

I did some funny test today, between my beloved 80-400mm and the new 150-500mm, focus speed test. Well, the 150-500 is not that fast, silent but not that fast, slightly faster then the 80-400 but that is all. At 400mm (for both lens), the 80-400 win, again, not by much but it does win. Saldly, the 80-400 would be the best lens for the money out there if would had a faster AF. Saldy it doesn't. I have borowed my friend 400mm f/5.6 and that is a crazy fast AF lens, but, it still at 5.6. I will buy one tomorrow for fun because it's so fast. BUT, again, i don't really think it's more sharp then the 80-400... at 400mm.

I'm just having fun. I also compare AF speed between my Canon 300 f/2.8 and my Sig 120-300, the Canon win but again, not by much. If i compare the price i paid for the Canon (bought new) and the Sig 120-300 (bought used at 1500$), the Sig win by far!

The sig 120-300 with TC 1.4 give me the same kind of result then the Canon 300 with my Canon 1.4TC.

So sadly, there is still no perfect zoom lens going from 100 to 500mm. We can go to the moon and in space but it seem that they can not built a perfect zoom lens.

Cheers, Ben

wellll, yeah, they could buuuuuut, it would probably cost more that most folks earn in a year for one lens.

Another way to consider it is to remember nothing close to this existed a few years ago...now there is at least the 150-500mm. And it does not appear to be all that shabby. Enough so, I broke my moritorium on anymore camera gear until the end of the year and am buying one. I am even putting off buying a tripod.

Like you I want to have some fun and I know I will with this lens. In the mean time I will make do with my monopod and get a better head for it. None of my lenses are perfect, but I think people get too caught up in that whole side of this...there is not perfect, ever, anywhere in nature. So, I don't think any lens will ever be perfect either. Doesn't mean it is still not something to enjoy and have fun with...after all we just take pictures and then we die...why spend that time fussing over perfect?

I knew I was going wrong somewhere when the images were so small but couldn't figure out where I was erring.

I'll post the corrected crops today.

Thanks once again. It's a big learning curve for me in PP.

No problem, glad to help out. 100% crops can be very confusing at first.

Phew - Finally, I managed to get 100% crop of my images :D. and here they are !! Note - I had to bring down the Image Quality to get under the limit of 150KB !!.

Derek, Thanks a ton for your post on 100% crop!:) It was extremely helpful for me in understanding what a 100% crop is and how it's done !! :)

I may not be welcome here but some people will be interested to hear this. Regarding the whole serial number, AI Servo/40D thing, Gentec who is the distributer in Canada for Sigma says that every 150-500 lens they have received is re-chipped before they send them to stores for sale. So even lenses with serial numbers below 1007001 are not plagued with this problem.

i switched my sigma to the 20D and I get sharper images. I found a few with my 40D that looks like a back focus. So maybe thats why the ones at a distance were so soft. A little better with the 20D. Sending my 40D back for some more fixes, because focusing at a distance was a;so a problem with my 300f4 on the 40D, so it could have been imparing focus on both lenses. 500mm photos at a close distance less than 40 ft. were fine. But even the 20D did better. I miss my 40D's ISO abilities for the sigma so hope that fix helps and I can switch back to it. [3rd time in to canon] I also discovered the 1.4x teleconverter Tamron worked well with the sigma on the 20D and not on the 40D. I had to take it off my 300f4 this year with the 40D, it was hunting so much. So I hope fixing the 40D will be working well with the sigma soon.
Here's my albums, so far I love the color, very little processing needed other than sharpening. Amazing results up close. There are some full frames in both albums.

The vote is still out between 400and 500mm. I may send the sigma back for some calibration as well, in hopes of getting better shots afar. I really love the lens, but if the 400-500mm isn't usable other than landscape type birding and up close, I'm not sure I want to lug it around all day. Pretty easy though for a few hours. I have a small monopod for guns that has a rest on top, so it gives me some stability and getting some rest off my shoulders while waiting for birds. A very handy gadget! Less cumbersome than a monopod.

If any of you get some shots beyond 80 ft. would you mind posting a few? Thanks!

Just trying out the 1.4x and 2x Sigma TCs on my 150-500. Here's a shot of the moon tonight at 1400mm, along with a 100% crop. :)
