Oh, goodies, I woke to wood...Bigmos is Out For Delivery!!! YeeeeeHaaaawwww!!!

Congrats! Did you get a good deal? ;)

NEAT picture, it's almost like there is a "sphere of focus" (rather than the phrase 'depth of field') around the fuzzy bunny critter. I love the effect.

Thanks. The bunny just happened to stop in a really good spot.

Yes, I can get pretty good shots even at 1/40 sec but I'm talking about comparing directly with the 100-400.

The OS doesn't seem much better than the 100-400 IS even with both @400mm

When the OS is active you still see a bit of camera shake right? (Duno how to express it... not drift but a bit of shaking)

I had camera shake at 1/100 on the 100-400 when I used it. I had to go faster (1/125, 1/160 or so). That is only 560mm effective compared to 800mm on the Sigma. I can still see some minor shake with the Sigma, but that is only at 500mm and near the MFD so around 8 feet or so and it is very minimal.

Out of curiosity what bag are you guys using to transport/store your lens? I don't think my Domke F-2 is going to hold it and my other gear so I am going to have to either use the case that came with it or get a new bag.

I am luck as I planned ahead knowing how I am and that just a couple lenses would never keep me happy. I found a great, and mean amazing, deal on an NG5737 Large backpack bag...yeah, it's HUGE but I also can carry my 17" laptop, spare battery as well as my whole mobile broadband EVDO hotspot setup (though I can just plug my USB EVDO modem into my laptop if the better half does not have her laptop along). I know fully loaded it's gonna be around 30-40lbs. My docs don't want me hand carrying more that 20lbs but the pack really keeps the weight balanced and being a pretty stout guy I can easily still handle the backpack. I can't carry that much just over the shoulder anymore but I have already tested it and as a pack it's great....but it's HUGE...still I have all my work tools as well as my for fun tools (the camera gear)...

holy schnickies!!! this beast is HUGE...I love it...FedEx Home Delivery, well, not so much...I swear FedEx Home Delivery (ya know they are a different service from standard FedEx Ground, yes?) Well, despite the address being printed on the label he tried delivering to the other place I own around the corner...despite the contact number on the box he claimed to have called and it was an incorrect number (the twat did not bother to check the area code), then when I pointed out the address number of my place and the address on the box his response was..and this is priceless... "...well, I'm not f rom around here..." he never seemed aware enough to get it that he was trying to deliver to the wrong address to begin with...anyway, this is about the 5th time FedEx Home Delivery has either completely screwed a delivery or come right to the edge...sigh...anyway, it's here and I am jazzed...

Took some sample pics and am about to see how they came out...btw, while it's heavy for sure, it's not awful at all. I doubt I would like to carry it around my neck, with the standard Canon strap, for a 3-mile hike but with a better strap it would be fine...but I am a pretty stout guy so these things are different. In fact I find the weight comfortable, though I am almost afraid to pic up my poor teeny 55-250 now...hahahahaha...ok, gonna check out the pics and see how goes the test OTB...

And super thanks to Jojo for taking the time to make sure it got here today! (I'll post that in the market place to but wanted to say thanks here too...)

My OTB first ever shot with this lens:

40d, iso100, f/8, 150mm, 1/800 only LR defaults for processing and resizing for here and was hand held
(oh, the focus point was the upper right section of the cooling grill on the right side of the AC unit on the left...make sense? :)

here is the same at 500mm and about the same focus point the only thing that changed was the shutter speed dropped to 1/320 to keep the exposure about the same.

I will say I can see I need at least an 1/800 to keep this thing from blurring while hand holding. Still it does not suck in any way...

Can you tell us what Serial it is?

Hows the OS for you? It should be possible to get a decent shot at 1/60sec.

hehehehehe....gimme a a bit...I will get that all for ya...1001926 is the s/n not sure if this one will need the firmware update to get 6.5fps or not...haven't even gotten that far yet...I promise more in a bit...I am super jazzed though. Will be using it a LOT starting Thursday for our dawg show in town. Luckily it's all outdoors so light will not be an issue. Anyone ever see a canine nose hair? snickersnicker....

ok here ya go...and again just minimal LR defaults for post shot RAW and pic #1 was resized, pic #2 was left as-is so it remains a 100% crop whicle viewing a 100% image.

Pic #1: OS1 mode, f/6.3, hand held, 1/30th, iso640, 500mm, built-in flash fired
Pic #2: 100% crop of pic #1

while I have not tested it yet...looks like mine will need to go in and have it's firmware updated based on this info:

http://www.sigma-photo.co.jp/english/news/info_080527.htm (external link)

I don't need 6.5 right now so I can wait a bit...after the 9th of next month I'll setup the service with Sigma.

more later or even tomorrow, I have to hose the place down before "she who must be obeyed" gets home tomorrow... :D
