6.3?? Off the list of maybe buys... :(

Looks that way. I was hoping this thing would be somewhat usable for sports, but unless it's really really bright I don't see it happening, especially at the long end. And who knows what the AF will be like.

Still hoping for the best but I won't be surprised if it doesn't come through.

Yeah, those f-stops look dissapointing for the 150-500. I think I'll stick with the 120-400. Plus, I think the weight of the "smaller" zoom will agree with me more.

Still looking forward to your results Tony!

Tony-S when you get it report the Fstop at the focal ranges. Unless that chart was directly from sigma I still am waiting for hard proof then.

I'm surprised at that chart too. I don't see why it isn't like every other lens in its class (i.e., f5.6 at 400mm). I'll wait and see too.

Regardless, even if it is the case that it is f6.3 at 400mm, people need to remember that it's still comparable (if not faster) than any of the other comparable lenses if a 1.4x is added to them with the 150-500 at 500mm f6.3. That is, those 400mm f5.6 lenses are 560mm f8 lenses. The fact that the new lens is "only" 1/3 a stop slower but adds an extra 100mm is something in its favor. And you still get AF. 500mm f6.3 is a good, "low cost" way to go.

Oh, I'm aware that f/6.3 is faster than the f/8 I'd get with a 1.4 teleconverter. I was just hoping that at 400mm it would still be f/5.6.

ughhhhhh, I'm torn between the two Sigmas and stretching my budget for the Canon 100-400L. Maybe if someone just sent me $1300 for the Canon, I can put myself out of my misery ;)

I'm really hoping for something good with this lens. It would pair great with my kit lens, so that I could get the 50mm f/1.8 and maybe a sigma 10-20mm super wide angle. That should do me in the short term atleast...We'll wait and see how the pictures turn out!

OK, just a quickie. I just stopped the car and took this at 500mm f/7.1 with the OS on. I don't have time to do the testing properly as I have to get packed for Kenya. First is full-frame reduced to 800 px wide, second 100% crop of the presumptive focal point. No pp other than conversion to jpeg.

The lens is f/5.6 at 250mm and f/6.3 at 300mm.
