For 500mm, that looks quite good IMO (I've seen lots worse with the Canon 100-400 @ 400mm) Add little bit of USM and you are set. What was shutter speed? I'm assuming that OS did it's job on that pic

Looks like the focus might start well in front of the gals at the table, look at the pine needles in the upper part of the photo, as well as the grass in front of the table. What does the 100% crop look like on other parts of the photo? Of course at f/6.3, the DOF is probably quite large. I would love to see more pics where you are able to control the circumstances a bit better, looking forward to your results.

BTW, I presume you got out of there pronto after you took the picture! Not sure how it would look like if some guy pulls up, rolls his window down and starts taking pictures of two young female girls. Best to lay low for a while to let the cop activity die down :)

LOL, yeah that would look strange, wouldn't it?

Not enough information.......

Undecided........ ;)

86mm filter according to B&H. Not that I would put a filter in any situation personally.

Is it me or is the focus off or is it just soft?

Tony-S wrote in post #5614728 (external link)
OK, just a quickie. I just stopped the car and took this at 500mm f/7.1 with the OS on. I don't have time to do the testing properly as I have to get packed for Kenya. First is full-frame reduced to 800 px wide, second 100% crop of the presumptive focal point. No pp other than conversion to jpeg.

The lens is f/5.6 at 250mm and f/6.3 at 300mm.

Like I stated earlier, the pine needles and the grass in front of the table seems to be more in focus, so I would be curious what the intended focus point was. Getting a crop of those areas to compare would be great, or just some new more controlled tests would work as well.

Most of the cops I've known would just ask to have the images emailed to them...

Regarding the 40D and 120-400/150-500 issue (if you haven't seen the notice it's here http://www.sigma-photo.co.jp/english/news/info_080527.htm (external link) ), it seems most places with the 150-500 in stock now here in the USA have units that need to be "flashed" with the s/w update. It looks to be a simple fix, but it does necessitate sending it to Sigma NY.

I spoke with Allen's Camera in PA just now and they have 4 copies in stock. All 4 have the bug. So they said they are going to send them all to NY to have them fixed. Even more interesting is that I spoke with Sigma NY themselves this morning about the issue, and they said they had not heard of any issue like it. So I informed them  They said thanks for letting us know! LOL :D...

Anyway, we need more time and more user comments on both the 120-400 and 150-500. I'm not concluding much either way from what's been posted thus far from what I'm seeing around the forums. I'd like to get my mitts on a 150-500 OS sometime soon though. I am real curious about its 500mm f6.3 performance specifically.

Any chance you have a Bigma handy nearby or from a friend? It would be cool to compare both lenses side by side, and if you have a 100-400, bonus!
