Fairly interesting competition.

http://www.pcphotomag.com/top100/ (external link)

Usual story about handing over complete rights to your photo by entering, except here you are only handing over rights to a 640x480 and less the 125kb version of your pride and joy. Not as bad as normal, and the first couple of prizes are pretty nice.

OK, someone here can score the grand prize I'm sure. Just make sure to post about it when you do. :)

I read 3 different things and there is no mention of what we have to take pictures of to be in this contest? I'm confused. Why don't they just come out and say what the assignment is? All i see is blabber about omg you can win $1000 and a 5D. No mention of what the contest is... Big publicity ploy, microsofts way of trying to get attention to it's version of google earth.

meh

Considering the contest is tied to what they consider to be the "Top 100 Iconic Locations..." I'd guess they're looking for Travel photos.

It's all on the pcphotomag link. There is a list of their selected 100 iconic locations. Think you have a sweet photo of one, go ahead and submit it, but they aren't after general stuff, just their chose places.

They are all listed here http://www.pcphotomag.com/top100/locations.php (external link) It was cunningly hidden behind the Locations link on the main page. :)

For instance, in California they are after the Golden Gate, Big Sur, Mt Whitney, and some poppy reserve in Lancaster.

Makes you wonder, Lancaster? Not really on my list of top vacation spots. I guess its better than Barstow.

yeah I just found this.

"You can submit up to three photos. Photographs should be in keeping with the general theme of the Top 100 Iconic Photo Locations of the World, including, but not limited to, photos of historical locations, landscape and travel."

They have this listed in one small section, the rest of all the links talk about the microsoft earth and the 5D.

This contest should be interesting. I'm pretty lucky to be living in Philadelphia.. This place is littered with historic sh!t. :)

In Philly the JFK plaza is their location of choice. I guess nothing else in the state is worth a mention. ?

yeah love park is a major challenge. Every 5 minutes there are at least 100 people that take pictures with their significant other at this statue. No lie, even on rainy days people show up there to take pictures with their loved ones.

There is this one smart bum that sets up camp there. He sees couples approach the statue and he offers to take their picture with their own camera then asks for change!! He is probably rich no joke.

But NY and everything else on the list is pretty close to Philadelphia, Baltimore & DC is only 2 hour drive, NY is about an hour away.

Aren't they all. Still, of someone has a nice photo of one of these locations, sending of a small version of it may net them something nice, and really cost very little.

Sounds like you need to tripod mount and then take enough photos that you can ghost out the people. The bum may be a problem though. I wonder how long before he shows up with his own 5D and starts charging for photos. :)

Don't need a 5D to make money there. I'm not exaggerating about the 100 people per hour on just about any given day, if he gets a dollar from each of them he's already making more than you and I combined!

=)

Looks like Microsoft doesn't know how to spell "Crator" Lake. It's wrong in several places.

Exactly. Microsoft & Canon don't want to give you a 5D because they think you deserve one. They want to promote their stuff. That's how contests work.
