I'm told that these fellows like the tops of trees. Luckily for me, the place where this was taken has stunted trees.

40D, 70-200 f/2.8L w/ 1.4x, ISO 640, 1/1600, f/10, cropped, Gaussian blur applied to the sky in PS.

I don't think this is a bad shot but even with the smaller size here, it looks like his face/eyes are just a little soft on the focus. I know birds can be a little tough because they're so small, but as with all "critters" having the eyes in focus is essential.

Hi Joe,

Nice shot. I wish I had better luck with birds. Seems a bit dark on my monitor, tho. I increased the highlights with curves and sharpened the eyes a bit.

Why did you apply a blur to a flat coloured background?

If you pixel-peeped, it wasn't flat. The image was a substantial crop, so it became apparent.
