I'll be going to a Cubs game tomorrow night. It'll be daylight till the middle of the game but the lights are generally on the entire time. Sitting about 50 rows up. Any tips on settings, etc. Using a 30D + Sigma 70-200 2.8.

In the past I've been able to ask an usher if I could go down to the 1st row and grab a couple of pics with no problem. That was with a P&S. I hope they'll still let me tomorrow.

Do you have a monopod? That would help. Otherwise, just play with your iso and aperture in order to get a useable shutter speed.

I dont think they allow mono or tri pods at wrigley.

I was just there a week or so ago and only grabbed one shot

Had I not been there on business I would have brought a longer lens and taken alot more photos. I was pretty free to move around where ever I wanted, we walked down a few rows with no incident.

I shoot a lot of film

Don't expect much from 50 rows up with a 200, but have fun nonetheless. :)

As for the monopod, it depends on who's watching the door. I've gotten in with one before, but have been stopped and had to check it another time. (Stick it up your sleeve and you'll be good to go ;))

Personally I like to shoot Tv for baseball, I find it the easiest way to choose the amount of "freeze" in a shot without having to worry about the exposure needle.

ISO 100 primarily, but bump if needed...
AI Servo...
high speed burst mode (most of the time)...
auto WB generally works just fine, but you may want to set custom...
put a hood on the lens if you've got one.

That's about all I can think of for now. We'll be waiting for pics. :D

I would make sure you have a SS high enough to freeze action. I wouldn't try and keep the ISO set at 100 if it's sacrificing shutter speed. You could probably go up to 400 with no problems, and be able to keep a shutter speed way up there. You want to try and freeze the action as much as possible.

In terms of shots you'll get, I don't know how much you'll get from your seats with that lense. Go and see, and if you're too far away, just enjoy the game.

For night games you'll pretty much be shooting wide open with a pretty high ISO in order to get fast enough shutter speeds. I've found it annoying to get good shots at night games, so I'm only going to take my camera to day games in the future.
In my experience, 200mm isn't nearly enough to get good shots unless you're in a field box and not very far back. My 200mm L is definitely insufficient at a ballgame, even on a 40D.
