I haven't shot skating since I had to do a "what's it all about?" project for my digital photography class at my university.

My friend wanted me to meet up with him at a local cement skatepark and rollerblade.

I hurt my shin probably 45 minutes into the session so I decided to get my camera out of my back and set up my off camera flashes and see what good stuff I could get.

Here's the result, as stated in the title C&C is encouraged.

Tack sharp images. I like them all, but would have to agree about wanting to see some of the images where the skater was not dead smack in the middle of the image. Just cropping the image will add a lot I believe. If you do not mind me asking, what was your strobe set up for these shots?

I tried cropping the images a little bit to make them a little less centered but I guess it didn't help much. I don't have a fisheye and and my widest is 17mm which is mostly what I shot at most of the day. Unless I felt like getting right where he would have been dropping back in and probably getting hit, the better angle wasn't gonna happen, at least not with this lens.

Thanks Not4you! The third shot has to probably be my favorite shot of the day, skatingwise.

Like I've stated above, I have cropped the images a little bit here and there but I guess not enough seeing as how he's still pretty dead in the center.

My strobe setup for these shots was a nikon sb-25 used for the main light set at 50mm and a Vivitar 285hv set at 50mm for the rim lighting fired via Gadget Infinity wireless triggers.

I still need to mod them because if I get in certain positions either one or both the flashes won't go off.

This was my first time shooting this park so I was trying to get the main "duh" angles down first before trying to expand outside the box. If it weren't for the constant messing with my strobes and wireless setup I probably would have gotten to that point during his session.

Thanks for the feedback everyone and keep it coming!

You don't need a fisheye to shoot good skate stuff. If you're going to shoot long lens though, you don't have to get super-tight comp. Try to get some of the surrounding area in it while still lighting the skater well. Here's an example I did just two days ago.

There are a thousand things I don't like about this photo (especially the blown out ground) but you can get the gist of it. Even when shooting quarterpipe-style obstacles, don't give up on landscape. You can get some really col shots that way.

Also, when you do decide to purchase a fisheye, you will learn that the viewfinder is not a necessary tool... one can quickly pull away a camera right after the pic is taken so that the subject can land the trick. Like this! :)

As far as dead center goes, just get your weighting right before even taking the shot! But you are off to a good start, I look forward to seeing your new stuff.
