i assume you are talking about a personalized watermark etc...
this is most commonly done in photoshop by making a new layer over the photography either a text layer or image or really whatever you want!!
from there, the individual layer can be modified as required, eg half faded, shadows behind it...etc..

do you have photoshop?
i dont have experience with elements but i assume this can all be done in elements too.
(elements is a basic version of photoshop and hence much more affordable)

I tried to write my signature, but my pen ran out and I put a big scratch on my monitor

The only way that I can think of outside of using Photoshop is to use some type of text editor that will let you make a text box. Just set the fill color to transparent, type in your words, position the text box where you want it, then save the image file. That's a pretty rudimentary way to do it, but it will work in a pinch.

You'll find more help here if you get at least Photoshop Elements.
I'm still using PS7, so you really don't need the latest & greatest version of PS. ;)

Just about every image editing software I have seen since computers could show more than 16 colors have a text tool. If all you want is to add a simple text, look through your mac, I am sure that it has some software capable of doing this.

And nowadays, there is even image software on the web. http://www.picnik.com/ (external link) is fully capable of adding text to an image. Haven't used myself though, so I don't know its limitations.
