Haha...Oh yeah it looks totally ghetto. Cinefoil is basically black reynolds wrap.
I guess it just depends on what a photographer is shooting and his personal style. I learned to cinefoil barndoors from assisting a great photographer back in the day. For example, lets say we needed to light the carpet on an architectural shoot but we didn't want light to spill on the furniture. Then I'd setup a head and reflector on a floor stand...skim the light across the carpet and fashion a cinefoil barndoor to keep the light from spilling on the furniture. Grids wouldn't work because they didn't provide enough coverage on the floor and would look spotty and unnatural. Barndoors didn't work because they were too straight and would leave shadow lines on the furniture. But cinefoil worked perfectly.
Another ghetto thing I learned from him was taping gels to lights. Accesory holders got in the way and we couldn't always use them in conjunction with other modifiers. Tape always worked. We taped gels inside softboxes, outside softboxes, over grids, snoots, fresnels...everything. His whole studio was filled with broncolor but we never used gel holders and just taped everything. An added benefit of taping gels is that they can be bent so that there is more ventilation on the front of the head. Gels laying flat in an accessory holder don't ventilate as well...especially when using multiple gels on the same light.
Just depends on a photographer's particular style what will work best for him.
