Hi All,

One thing I always wondering is how much cropping is done between the original and final shots for baseball. Ideally, I should "full the frame" but by doing so I invariably end up chopping off heads, feet, hands, etc. For batters and pitchers, I got this down pretty good, since they don't move much, but how about fielders and runners? Does anyone have any "before and after" photos of uncropped and cropped shots. I would like to get a sense of how much to fill the frame. Thanks.

Do you want to show the action? That calls for a wider crop to show what's happening.

Show the Player? Then a tighter crop is in order.

Others might disagree, but I like to limit dead space to less than 2/3 of the image.

Thanks for getting back to me. Here's a few examples of my original uncropped shots. Comments are welcome in terms of how much "filling the frame" #1 is probably too close (besides being out of focus), #2 - too far way?, #3 about right?? Thanks for looking.

I assume that you are using a zoom, get more of the scene and crop on your monitor.
Is difficult to crop sports images with the camera/lens.

Crop a head, is considered very tacky.

Must definitely (cutting off heads certainly wasn't intentional, just trying to aim in the general location of the action), he's another example with everything in, but I have to crop significantly to isolate the action. I guess I'm try to find the happy medium between "fill the frame" and get max resolution or zoom out, get all the action but lose bits.

I'd have to say that out of all the pics the last one (#4) I think is framed the best.

The picture of the pitcher is a bit tight IMO. A little more of the background to the sides would be nice, and I think hes framed up a bit too high.

With #4 you could crop out the sign in the background, since it's a bit distracting. I did this real quick not sure how I like it...

With baseball I like how the diamond, the field and the grass look. I think chopping too much is worse then leaving a little bit extra.

...so I invariably end up chopping off heads, feet, hands, etc.

It's pretty much a personal experience, thing. If I HAD to get the shot, I'd shoot a bit wider, though the years I filled the frame for transparency's makes it tough to remember to do every time.
I shot pretty wide the first time here, & still managed to blow the focus at times. Normally, those would go in the "Don't show these to anyone" file. :D

Frank, do you have a list of your favorite link posted anyplace?
You do seem to come up with something that's right on spot.

Mostly in the Stickys. I hate to 2-finger type, so I save the links in notepad & a quick search will bring them up.

I recently noticed that, if the title is descriptive enough, there are usually more good links at the very bottom left hand corner of each thread.
