Hey guys,

I am donating my time to shoot a 25 lacross game for DOVE (external link). Question for everyone, they are playing a indoor box game to my understanding thats just ice rink with no ice.

I plan on shotting with my 30D and my 70-200 2.8L

Can someone give some advice on how to shoot this, my undersanding is i will have fee roam of the area and i know shooting through the plexi glass can suck and i am not sure if they will have the camera slots open or not i would hope soo.

Shoudl i put on a CPOL lens and take the loss of the stop to reduce the glare shooting through the glass or should i maybe get above the glass and use my 1.4TC if needed for the range.

Or how safe is it to be sitting in one of the boxes shooting?

Sorry guys first time shooting this kind of in door event.

Regards,

Michael

Sorry i forgot to add i also have a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM but not sure how well it would hold up under indoor hockey lighting.

There might be holes in the glass for you to put your lens through or shoot from the penalty box if there is no glass in front of it. I would use the 70-200, your probably going to need as much light as you can get.

You may want to bring a laptop (if available) to upload while there - 25 hours of sports will burn through cards very quickly.

Ever shoot ice hockey before? It's basically the same setup. Some rinks are lit better than you'd expect to see at professional rinks (ie, lighting overkill). Others make you wonder how in the world the players can keep track of a black puck in such horrid lighting. Just remember to set your WB. Hopefully it won't be mixed lighting, but even then, you can probably find a happy median.

The bonus for indoor lacrosse is that they're not going to move nearly as fast as hockey, and it can sometimes be played on a slightly smaller field (keep in mind they may just be using an indoor soccer field). I would suggest bringing your 28-70, as you're going to miss out on some of the 'bench' shots if your short end is limited to 70, and much of the passing is going to occur on the peripherals.

It may not be a bad idea to go ahead of time and maybe clean some of the glass behind the cage. Since players spread out more to cover the outside, you'll get a good vantage point for shooters, and it can't hurt to have some clean areas to shoot from.

Dont forget batteries. You might be able to recharge at the rink.

Check out some threads on shooting sports with flash and bring a flash or two; just to be safe. Some rinks are horribly lit and you might find flash may be your only option.
