as for the apex - I'm not a rider but I'd guess judging by the position of the bike and where he is looking, that he's past the apex already and is heading out onto a straight ... am I close?

Yes in this case he is actually past the apex, but I liked how the helmet reflection made it appear as though the apex was still ahead.
