I can appreciate that it was a dreary day but it only occupies the middle third of the histogram.
You can open it up using "shadows/highlights" in PS. Big difference.

I love it.

To flat for me. Either pump up the colors or pull them down to almost b/w.

I like the image Rad. I tried to give a little boost to contrast and depth while keeping the muted tones and fog in the hills.

Wouldn't hazard a guess on LD's technique, but I got close to his results in CS3 using "shadows/highlights" and levels and curves.
His is better though.

Curves in LAB color to drive the colors apart.
Channel blending with the green channel to lighten the trees.
Further channel blending after applying curves to the green channel to further accent the differences in the trees.
Hue change on the trees to make them a little more green.
Contrast curves.
Noise reduction in the sky.
Cloned some dust bunnies in the sky.
S/H layer 5% shadows, 10% highlights, 8% mid contrast.
hiraloam USM to add shape to the hills.
A lot of my editing, while designed to seperate colors, also increases the saturation of colors so I hit the whole thing with about -20% desaturate on the master channel.
