This topic seems to come up ever so often, especially here in these gearhead forums. Here is a link that shows you what can be done if a P&S is in the hands of a talented photographer.

Nice photos indeed. . .an SLR would cut down his PP time dramatically.

Photoshop skills are a necessity in today's world of photography.

His HDR is far from perfect.

there's no arguement...
a scratch golfer (one who shoots on average no more than 9 over par for 18 holes) would likely shoot that well with a $200 set of clubs...a high handicap golfer would benefit from a $1000 set...

...better users' skills are more able to overcome equipment limitations...better equipment is more able to overcome users' limited abilities

While a competent photographer can do well with an P&S I see a lot of PP here. Too bad! I'd really like to see what he can DO.

Absolutely - but still, garbage in is garbage out. When you don't know what you're doing with exposure, composition, techique, etc., all the PS skills in the world won't create a great body of work or portfolio.

It's a beautiful image and very painterly in it's rendering. But to me it's gone beyond photography. I certainly enjoy looking at it, but too my eye it's more artistic graphic design than my concept of the traditional photograph.

Photoshop is just like a wet darkroom in that it allows you to finish your vision. Adams once said that exposing and processing the negative was like writing the musical score, printing the final print was performing the piece. You give three very gifted photographers that are also gifted at printing the same negative or the same raw file they are very likely to give you three different interpretations. Thats why its so important that you interpret your own creation.

.... would still make for some pretty impressive, nicely spotlighted framed enlargements in a gallery though, viewed from proper distance. ;)
