I'm no expert as you can see, but I wanted to see what the picture would look like without the foliage, so I gave it a shot, still needs work, but this was just for an idea.

These are great suggestions and examples by everyone. But now I am really torn. I think the foliage provides a nice framing but the image is more powerful and concentrated with out it.

I appreciate everyones input. I think it is time to just suck it up and process one similar to superstes.

I like the foliage. It gives a sense of place and enhances the sense of aloneness.

I like LeuceDeuce's version with the branch cloned out. Given that she has passed, I think the composition as it stands is quite poignant and poetic. In fact, if you found suitable lines of poetry, you might consider adding them to the water, as in the attached, although I make no claims about poetic expertise.
