Ok, I've got a major emergency here. My viewfinder shutter just jammed (broke) and I don't have time to send the camera away to Canon for a repair as I am leaving in 7 days to Ireland for 10 weeks.

My options:

1. Take it to the local camera store and see if they can fix it. I will be doing this tomorrow first thing, before I try any do-it-myself solutions

2. Take it broken to Ireland and have it fixed there. I will be there on a photography internship so I will have access to other cameras for work, BUT nothing that I can use on my own time.

3. Try to fix it myself (warranty is long gone anyway), if that fails buy a 30/40D to use in the interim, get 1DII fixed once I'm home, and then sell the 30/40D.

What should I do?

Here is a pic of the problem, it looks like there are only a few screws holding that part of the body together - an easy fix? There is no movement at all of the shutter when I wiggle the lever that controls it.

If it's not under warranty, take it apart and unjam it.

Don't break it. ;)

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional

This might be a good time to mention that my brother received all the "good with electronics and other finicky things and able to take them apart and put them back together properly" genes, while all I got was an appreciation for good light. Too bad he's in a different city. . .maybe I'll give it a shot tonight after I have something to steady my hands.

Are you coming via Heathrow?

Can you change your connection to Ireland to give you a day in London?

Get to Victoria: http://www.londontoolkit.com/travel/heathrow_bus.htm (external link)

Walk to Fixation: http://www.fixationuk.com/ (external link)

Tell them in advance that you are coming and plead to get it done while you wait.

OK, so doing it myself is out of the question, as the whole viewfinder assembly that looks like it can come off is welded to the camera body. I took out all the visible screws and it won't budge, and the diopter adjustment wheel is attached to something deep within the viewfinder that I don't want to mess with. :(

So it looks like it's off to Canon for it, it needed a checkup anyway. I'll have to find a replacement body or dust off my old EOS A2 that has been gathering dust for the past few years. :(

I'm arriving in Heathrow at 3pm next Friday, and connecting to Dublin soon after, so I don't think that'll work, as Fixation is closed on weekends. I'll keep looking for somewhere in Dublin to fix, I've got a pro photographer friend who lives there who might know someplace. Thanks for the link and info though, it might be a life saver!
