canon s10 error message

Does anybody know what E28 error message means on a Canon S10 digital camera?

When I turned the dial to "on", the lens came out for a few seconds and then went back in. I've got "E28" shown on the top window.

How do you fix it? Where do I go to get help?

Not sure if I can help much, but I got a "CF error" a few weeks ago on my S10 and wound up sending it back to Canon for repair. Since I am outside the warranty period (>1 year) Canon wants to charge $150 (flat rate) for the repair.

It appears to be related to the battery somehow. However the suggested remidy of removing the battery for more than 20 min. hasn't worked for me yet.

scytacki, did you resolve the E28 problem with your S10? I'm experiencing similar problem, and removing the battery doesn't seem to help.

I was able to temporarily fix it.

I opened up the camera and took the lense assembly out. I could see that one of the thin wires that connects the focusing motor/servo had snapped off.

This happened because the ribbon cable that the wire was attached to, had become unglued from the inner part of the lense assembly. So when this ribbon cable was pulled on (which happens every time the lense goes in and out) it was pulling directly on the thin wire. I suspect this is what broke the wire.

So to fix it I superglued the ribbon cable back in place and resoldered the wire back onto the ribbon cable. Don't try this unless you have nothing to lose because a little superglue in the wrong place and your lense will be perminately stuck.

The e28 error went away and I could take pictures again.

But the error has come back and I haven't taken it apart yet to find out why.

However I still don't know what exactly the e28 message means. I was told by two cannon service reps that it was related to the lense. Perhaps it is a general electrical failure with the lense. Or maybe it specific to the focus motor/servo.

I'm coming from germany and my english isn't very well. But I'll try to describe.

E28 is an error, the electric of the lense does not work.

There are two small cables inside the lense, that will be pressed to the contact ribbon, when the lense is fixed. These small cables must be solders (ed?) ( using soldering iron ) to the contact ribbon.

The battery and accu has to be removed for about 20 minutes.

After reassembling it works very well.

Mine S20 started up again after a little thump on the side of the camera.

If the E28 message turn up again, I`ll trie to find the small wires that goes from the lins.

I've solved this E28 problem, for now.

With the lense sticking out and the "E28" shown on the window, I tapped on the lense gently a few times(to be exact, I tapped it three times with the fleshy part of my right fist). I then turned off and on the camera. Guess what?

"E28" ain't there no more! The camera works fine now.

It could just be my lucky day. Good luck, everybody.

My S10 also started working after rapping the bottom and the USB cable side with my hand. Seems fine now.

OK so my S20 had been sitting in the bottom of a drw for over 2 years now after emitting the E28 error and canon quoting me for £130 to fix it (although they did offer a 6 month warrenty, I now discover that they just send all there canon digital work to http://www.lehmannsdir​ect.co.uk/mainindex.as​p although I have never approached them to quote).

Anyway, after reading all these posts, I charged up the battery and got the lens out, gave it a few random gentle raps with my fingers and then, lo and behold, roberts your mothers brother, the thing started working again!!! Hurrahh.. how long for I dont know, but if it fails I will post again.. and might consider opening it up and looking at these here dodgy connections. Then, if all else fails, I'll pay whats required. It was a great camera when it worked, and its still cheaper to get it reparied than getting the equivalent second hander of ebay.

Seems like I'm just another victime of this horrible E28 error.
The problem begun after I cleaned the lens (rubbing it very gently with a soft cloth).
My Powershot S20 worked fine inside the house, but outside (temperature 6°C) I got the E28 error.
Is it really possible to ruin my Powershot just by cleaning the lense?!?!?
I hope I can use the tip just to tap the lense when the error occurs again.
