It comes up in discussion from time to time but I am always amazed at how many people use UV filters for protection. Using a filter is one thing.. but using CHEAP crappy ones are another. I won't say where or who, but I recently saw an 85mm f/1.2L being shown with a Quantaray UV filter on it. WHY would you go out and buy a $1,600.00 lens and throw a piece of $18.00 crap in front of it to shoot with?

A friend of mine who shoots Nikon was telling me that he finally took the UV filter off of his 70-200 DX lens because of AF issues. He told me that without the filter, it focused much faster and more accurately. Most likely because the flat glass filter was causing a washout condition (subtle lens flaring) and played havoc with his AF sensors. Ugh...

Ok.. I'm through ranting.

I only use one under crappy conditions, but always use a hood.

I *think* I'm having AF issues with my 70-200 in the long end with a UV filter attached. It came with a Tiffen so I took it off and put a B+W on. Still have issues, I guess this lens just hates filters. This is the 3rd B+W filter I've bought because i had good expience with the first 2. Luckly my 24-60 is the same filter size so it's found it's home there.

B+W filters (mainly) and hood (almost always outdoors) on all my lenses except the 70-300/DO (hood always).

Somewhere in my kit is a cheap Canon filter. I better check to see if its still on one of my lenses! Damn, Canon:evil:

Too much stuff, not enough shooting time.

Canon T4i (2 lenses), Fuji X100s, Olympus OM-D EM-1 (3 lenses)

Why do you say that? Many POTN members buy from them regularly.

I don't waste my time or money on filters. Glad I don't either, dropped my 200 on concrete a few weeks ago, all that happened was the lens cap got scratched. I am certain that a filter would have shattered.
