really brought out the dynamic range of this scene. not overcooked by any means.

i really like how the underside of the center portion of the bridge frames the sky. it's just somewhat of a shame that it also frames a dock with no vacancies. not exactly flattering to the frame. it'll be likely that anyone confirms their suspicions of this being the result of HDR by notice of the level of exposure and shadow detail in the boats. honestly, that's the only way i was able to tell.

the sky is truly captivating.

thanks for posting! :)

While the bridge is obviously the suject, it is quite noticeable that the lighting and the sky are better on the marina and cityscape behind.

One could come back at different times of the day hoping for a little more dramatic lighting on the bridge.

Very nice!

Thank you for taking the time to comment saiminyaku. Framing the marina in within the bridge was definately my intention (good or bad), and I loved how the sky under the bridge had completely different dynamics than the sky above it.

As for HDR; it has become a common mistake that many have made regarding my images. This is a single exposure, and has not gone through any faux HDR process (i.e. no photomatix, no dynamic-hdr). I do think it's cool that people think it is HDR though :)

Again, thank you for taking the time to comment.

Thank you Robert,

It was that strong distiction of lighting above and below the bridge that I found intriguing.

I was playing with a tighter crop to further accent the bridge as the frame for the marina, but I didn't really like the angles of the bridge when I cropped it closer. I just paused writing this to try it again, but I stilll don't like the tighter crop.

Thank you for taking the time Robert.

Thank you very much for the kind words Gail. Cityscapes are definately where I'm most drawn too with my photography, and I'm really trying to get better. I'm glad it's showing a bit :)

Sometimes I feel like I should go somewhere further from home to take pictures, but then I come to the realization that I live in an absolutely magnificent place to practice the craft. I'm trying to really see what's around me rather than just being a part of it (if that makes sense).

I almost had this irresistible impulse to say that this "is the worst image that I ever seen" followed by a . But...

Then my sanity meds kicked in and I looked at the picture.

I can understand why most folks think your work is HDR as your range is incredible on this and your other work.

It's another one of your great photographs...nothing else needs to be said. ;)

it would be nice if mac-oriented browsers had the EXIF view option. otherwise, i could've avoided this whole misunderstanding. i assume you used ND filters then? the range has to be the result of a long exposure...doesn't it? at least in the case of not turning to HDR.

Edit: Don't worry about the missunderstanding it's no biggie at all. You are not the first person to assume that my stuff is HDR.

The range is a direct result of post processing. I use PS CS3 in order to do my work.

Well done Deuce. As another Islander (as is Gail), I should recogniz the bridge as I've driven over all of them many times going or coming from somewhere (Oak Street Bridge?)

I rather like the mood of this image, and the colouration. I suspect that the bridge piers aren't that warm in reality, but the colour balance suits the image well. I'm starting to think that we are so often hung up on attaining perfect and realistic colour balance that we lose the opportunity to use a colour cast to enhance the mood of an image.

Comment on what we shoot: Being in Vancouver, it would be difficult to be a natural landscape photographer - the time and distances involved are limiting. Gail in Nanaimo has tremendous opportunity to shoot seascapes. You might understand why I in Victoria have about 9,000 flower images.
