I currently have a 70-200 f/2.8L IS but would like something longer.

Cost aside, would you recommend I just get an extender (1.4x or 2x?) or go with Canon's 100-400mm?

and while you're here, which extender works best with the 100-400?

generally the x1.4 extender yields better image quality.

You have quiet a dilemma...both lenses are excellent....perhaps the 70-200 is little more versatile in terms of portraits, even landscaping and still be compatible with an extender if you need the reach..

would you use a 100-400 mm MORE than you would use the 70-200 ?

do you have anything to cover focal lengths to cover the gaps if you go for the 100-400 ?

i guess only you know at the end of the day :(

Cost aside, 100-400.

Why spend $300 when $1400 will do?

With your existing gear I would go 400mm 5.6 l, but if you want to choose from the Poll options I would go 1.4x or if you have money to burn the 1-4 IS. A lot depends on what you want to do and what conditions.

I would opt for the 1.4 on your 70-200 as it works well on it.
