Just like allways wearing your neck strap allways use a hood....
It's really only when you don't use one that you will have the chance to fully appreciate them...

When you say the hood such as the canon 'l'.... is this a special hood? i thought that the L was a lens type... am i wrong? if i get the 10-22mm i cant get a hood that mounts to the exterior of the lens rather than the barrel as you suggest, can i? and if so... ... you have a link or a model number for this hood?

On the 10-22 both the filter threads and hood mount to the exterial housing rather than the moving lens element, however since at 10mm a non-low profile filter can cause some vignetting it would probably be best to go with Canon's EW-83E hood.

Always use a lens hood...even if you don't like the lens. :)

I actually don't mind hearing the clunk of my 70-200's lens hood bopping into stuff whilst i walk because that tells me it's doing it's job. I try NOT to let the lens run into things, but you see what I'm saying: better the $30 hood than the $1300 lens.

There's another good reason for using a hood on all your lenses... It makes you look less like a noob and more like you know what you're doing.

For the Canon S series cameras using 58mm Lensmate adapter and B+W filters what would a good hood be and where would I get it?

I have one for each of my lenses. I was always wondering if it was necessary. Some valid points raised in here and makes me feel better about using them. lol
