I am requesting recommendations/suggestions on the best way to combine my camera's and lens to shoot this event- I have 3 people shooting and need group shots and close ups.

Event - Theater/Stage lights Dance recital
Camera choices -
1 ea 40D,
2 ea 10D,
2 ea 300D Rebels.

Lens -
canon 70-200 F2.8 IS,
canon 10-22 EFS, (won't work on the 10d?)
Tamron 28-75 F2.5,
canon 50 F1.8 (the cheap one)

Challenge... which lens with which body?

Each lens of course would be awesome with the 40d especially with the hi iso 3200 setting, or even just Hi iso 800/1600 for that matter. I only have 1 40d :(

Also, not sure which one wins the Tamron 28-75 or the 50 F1.8. On one hand the 28-75 zoom is nice, but on the other hand the F1.8 of the 50 could be useful for action shots.

I am considering renting a lens too, what would be a good fill in the gap lens... the 16-35 or the 24 or 28 primes? or?

how would you team up the lenses with these camera's?

Thanks

David A.

I think I'd take the 40D/70-200, 300D/10-22, and 10D/28-75.

By the way, you spelled your last name wrong.

40d with the 70-200
10d with the 28-75
300d with the 10-22

If you feel you would use the 28-70 range more then 70-200 swap them. Leave the 10-22 on the 300d.

30mm, 50mm, 85mm, and some zooms here and there.

You have 2x 10D and 2x 300D? Use the 2x10D. Go for the fast lenses; if you need ultra wide, change it out with the 70-200, which says that would go on the 40D. But the 10D has ISO 3200; the 300D only goes to 1600.

I would use the 28-75 over the 50mm due to faster/more accurate focusing.

As others have suggested 40d/70-200, 10D 28-75, rebel with the 10-22 since it woun't work on a 10D.

Canon 60D, 30D
Tamron 28-75 2.8, Tamron 17-35, Sigma 50mm 1.4, Canon 85mm 1.8

Thank you for your comments -

DStanic......... 28-75 over the 50 is my first choice too...normally - but I wonder about the 'action' part of dance and low light... if the 1.8 can bring something useful to the table over the 2.8. I might not need fast focusing with the dance - they tend to dance in lines back and forth, a little forward and backward so I could probably work manual focus if I had too. The 50 glass isn't as good. I think I will work the 28-75 - and try the 50 a few times and take a look later and see what I see.

Jon........ Yes I have 2 each of the 10D and 300D. I purchased a 300D and the 40D new, the others were bought used. Also, 1 of the 10D's auto focus is broken, but I bought it this way for $100 on purpose to use for macro work. I have a third 300D too, but I painted it Pink and I let my daughter use it - I guess it is her camera now!

dandan........... the problem is I need both ranges - I need individual close ups and groups shots. Interesting that everyone is throwing the 10-22 on the 300D......... I am real tempted to modify the 10-22 so I can run it on a 10D!

ImRaptor......... Seems to be with the consensus

KevinAldrich........ Everyone likes the 70-200 on the 40D

Here is what I did tonight - before reading your comments... shot a wedding reception and I used the 10-22 on the 40D and the 70-200 on the 10D (this is before everyone suggested I run the 70-200 on the 40D) Haven't had a chance to look over the 10-22 and 40D shots yet..... I am hoping to get some great close up group wide angle shots. I brought the 28-75 and 50 and never used them. I know the 70-200 on the 10D shots will be good.

And the thing about the 10-22 on the 300D.. Is I know unless I am shooting in open sunlight darn near I won't get anything useful out of it at a dance recital because of the action and difficult light - unless I pose a shot under full stage lights or something... That is where the rental idea comes in... get an awesome 16-35 or other Low F prime like a 24/28/35 and retire the 10-22 for freak shots. Just kidding, its a real fun lens. I think I need the low F to get the action.

Thank you all for your input - I don't dismiss your consensus. Frankly, I am glad I asked because it wasn't what I was thinking. If the 10-22 on 40D sucks, I will beg forgiveness and change my last name to Aldrich :), if it works I certainly will share my results.
