I have a week old 40d and finally felt I was ready for some real action. I shot some pics at a state high school game for a guy I umpire with because I was standing by him and his wife only had a p @ S and I thought I could help. I figured It'd be good practice getting shots of certain subjects. My reds and greens were a little over-saturated and I tried to compensate, are they too dark? I shot manual the whole game, with my f5.6, and iso from 100 to 160. Shutter went from 1/160 to 1/400. I already spent way too much time burning this guy a cd so i'm not changing anything, but what can I improve on for future shooting.

Plan on upping your shutter speed as fast as you can get it if you are going to be shooting a pitcher throwing the ball and want to freeze the baseball.

You might consider opening up a bit to get a shallower DOF and more subject isolation. For example, in your first image having the advertising so crisp on the fence detracts from the image of the players.

Unless you are deliberately trying to get motion blur in your images I would be shooting at a much faster shutter speed (at least 1/640) for all your non pitcher/batter shots. Don't be afraid to increase the ISO if necessary.

Overall it looks like you are off to a great start!

I agree with the comments about ISO and SS. An ISO of 400-800 would get you to 1/1000 to 1/2000 sec. Note the motion blur on the left foot of #6.

The DOF comment is also appropriate. Were you full open on that 5.6? Do you have a faster lens with reach?
