Sorry if this is in the wrong section, I just don't know which one it should go in

Does an upgrade to a G9 from a A630 make sense? I like the G9 for the external flash capability and less bulk. I might miss the flipout LCD of the A630, but the zoom is horribly noisy and the onboard flash isn't too my liking at all. Thoughts?

I'd got for it! The G9 is a great camera. You won't be unhappy with it.

The A630's also got fewer (about 210 vs. 280) kilopixels/sq. mm. on the sensor (which generally means lower noise) while the G9 offers longer video clips and RAW. The size difference is minimal; one is bigger in one dimension; the orther's bigger in the other 2 dimensions. The A630's use of standard AA cells vs. a proprietary battery may be an advantage if you travel extensively.

I wouldn't really mind losing the AA batteries. I wouldn't be using this extensively as it would be just for snaps and spur of the moment type things, or places when I can't bring my 40D. I also don't really shoot videos with my camera. Is there a big difference in IQ between these two? The A630's noise is really ugly, and I really haven't been satisfied with the colors it produces (I think my 40D spoils me).

You aren't going to find the G9 much, if any, better for sensor noise. Like I said, the A630's got bigger sensor sites than the G9. If you're shooting Large Superfine, maybe change to Large Fine to tone it down a bit. Canon has some G9 sample pics posted at the BeBit G9 page (external link).
