I only have one CF card that I use... I previously used it for my XTi and I was able to keep track of how many clicks by the file name on the card. I recently upgraded to the 40D. I know how many clicks I have taken because I know what the number was on the last pic I took on the XTi, but, I want to reset the card.
Any idea how to do that? Would I have to format, and if I format does that mean I won't be able to use my card reader? Thanks.

Yes ... just format the CF card in the 40D BEFORE you take any pictures. Then file numbering will start at 1 greater then the last one shot on the 40D, presumably 1, if it's a brand new camera.

Better yet - format in the computer. If you format in the camera, also do a Manual Reset (it's a menu option in the 5D and later).

If you still have the XTi, format the card there first. This will keep the file numbers on the XTI from contaminating the numbers on your new 40D.

Or if you have a CF card reader, delete everything before putting the card in the 40D.

In either case, you might re-format in the 40D anyway.

Reformatting in the XTi won't clear the file number unless you also reset the counter at the same time. The camera records the next folder, at a minimum, on the card when it's inserted or re-formatted.

Ok, so, I have taken some shots already on the 40D - I thought it would reset the card automatically but then noticed it just continued from the XTi. I know where I left off from the XTi.
Now , if I format in the 40D where exactly will it start at, will it start at 1 or does it know how many pics I already took with the 40D and start from there?

Ok , thanks. Thats not so bad. I know how many I already took so I can keep track. I just like to know how many clicks.

You go into the EOS utility and change how the camera writes the file to the CF Card. I did it to mine and it reset the numbers.

That doesn't change how they're written to the card, just how they're downloaded to the computer. And if you use the camera image number that won't be changed. If you use the sequence number it'll change depending on the d/l directory and other parameters you select.
