First off I would like to say I'm a beginner to everything, so please bare with me.

Since I'm working this whole summer I was thinking about upgrading my flash equipment, but the problem is I got NO idea of where to start to learn and have no education of it. I'm just asking to see what equipment I would need for just a walk-around flash (maybe 580ex?) and what basic info I would need about Flash?

Thanks!

You really can't beat the Stickies at the top of this Lighting Forum. There is a ton of useful information to make you an expert in no time. :D

Yeah, I spent hours reading through everything, but it just doesn't sink in for me.

Perhaps just lots of experimentation? Perhaps have a look in the Stickies for a book recommendation?
There are some great "flashers" in here, one will be along in a flash to help you out more ;)

If there's something you don't understand, feel free to ask specific questions and we'll help.

Flash gear depends a lot on individual needs and budget. Every unit has its pros and cons.

I use flash on almost all pictures of people, except when I'm shooting theatre.

paulle,
On Macro and Portraits the flash is used regularly by me.
Here on another topic Curtis N worded it very well!

The bottom line is this: You can capture images at the mercy of existing light, or you can create images by controlling the light.
