Lightroom: Moving Folders Problem

Hi.

I was rearranging my folders from within Lightroom itself. After moving a whole bunch of pictures I found that several hundrend files had been placed into the Missing Files section of Lightroom. These files were not deleted from the drive, and were still in their folders along with other files that were moved and showed up correctly in LR.

I couldn't figure out what I did wrong. I thought that if folders or pictures were moved from within Lightroom there wouldn't be a problem.

I am using LR 1.4.1

Suggestions?

~Dom

Hmm... I restarted LR and found that most of the previously "Missing Files" were not listed in LR's Missing Files folder. So, nstead of moving files from within LR, I moved the folders in Explorer (after exiting LR). When I opened LR again, the moved folder was written in red text. A right click on the red folder brought up a drop down menu one of the choices asking to find the missing folder, which I did. This approach gave me no problems whatsoever. I don't think I have lost any changes or metadata entries by usung this approach.

What if you move folders using a different program other than LR? For example, I use Thumbs Plus 7 for general stuff because it is very easy and very fast. I often create different directories and sort, cull etc with this program and use it for general stuff. I find LR somewhat slow and cumbersome compared to Thumbs, but I like LR for RAW stuff. The other day I was looking for some photos and couldn't find them anywhere and know I did not delete them--the only thing I could think of is that I moved them to a portable drive that was not at home.

I haven't tried moving the folders in anything but LR or Windows Explorer. I've looked at Thumbs Plus 7 website (http://www.cerious.com/) (external link). Do you use Thumbs Plus 7 instead of LR?

I use Thumbs for most everything--renaming, moving, sorting, creating new directories, culling, etc. This program totally rocks and takes little time to learn. It is NOT an Adobe product and is NOT a substitute for CS3, Elements or LR, but then, I have never been freindly with CS3, have not had the need for Elements 5, and LR does pretty much what I need it too--but slowly--unless batch RAW. I can stick a CF card into a reader, a Microsoft photo copy thing comes up before LR, and I can choose that program--make a directory and just about get the card started dumping before the LR brag window comes up. I click cansel LR when I am in a hurry and use it later, after sorting, renaming and stuff with Thumbs.

I hate computer photoshopping images--I try to get the shot right in camera--I have better things to do with my time. I don't want to turn this thread into a this vs that especially RAW vs JPEG vs TIFF etc--but for the most part, we need to turn the shot into a JPEG for compatibility and transmission, so why not shoot it correct in JPEG the first time anyway? People much smarter than me made these cameras, and I'll never be able to do the max on the computer program--better chance with the camera!

Thanks for the info. It sounds like I should give Thumbs a go.
