Just got a email from mydigitaldiscount.com, the latest gadget they have is a GPS photo tracker.

Basically from reading the blurb you go about your business taking your photos at the same time having the ATP gizmo with you, once the card is nearly full of you finish shooting, you insert your card in the ATP and it tags the photos based on your position at that time. I assume from this that you need to keep an eye on the time on the camera and make sure it doesn't drift that much.

Major downside would be it only takes SD and MS natively, you need an external adaptor for CF.

Anyone tried one of these, does it actually work as advertised?

By the way a link about it:

I have the Gisteq Phototrackr Lite. It works well. but there are differences among the many models..

does it show as a usb drive or does it require proprietary software (gisteq is the latter)

does it use the sirf III or MTK chipset or other (phototrackr is the MTK supposedly equal to or better than sirf III)

I have a friend who has the Sony model and - in his words - the signal gets blocked by a tree.

With the Phototrackr, you install the software, sync the clocks, take your pictures, load and process your pictures, then apply the GPS info to your JPGs. For $20 more you can download the pro update which updates the RAW files (I'd back it up first). Battery lasts a whole day - use rechargables.

5D, 20D ++ 50 1.4, 17-40, 70-200 2.8, 24-70, 85 1.8, 135 f2, 15 2.8, 580EX, flickr (external link) - and unrelated - DVX100a (x2), hv20

Does Phototrackr utilise any GPS unit that records tracks?

ANY gps unit? Out of the box I don't think so. It looks for its unit on a com port (usb). But There is an option to import a gps log file (*.gps), so if you have a unit that logs to a file and can be copied over, then that might work.

Using THEIR gps unit and software, you can export it to a standard gps text file I think. There's a FAQ on their website. By default it logs every 15 seconds. You can change that to more or less often - keep in mind what that does to how much it can record. Or you can set it to record every time it senses an X ft delta. Like every 5 feet or whatever you'd like. I like that option. But I've found it works fine every 15 seconds. every 10 feet and driving on the highway it logs like crazy. Using the software you can play that back and watch your trip at different speeds but not realtime it seems.

If you use a different GPS unit, then some options are not available of course like when/how to log. And no idea how well it will work even to embed the gps info. At that point, I'd just use JetPhoto or some other available software that's more geared toward standardized gps files.
