I’m trying to get a feel for my G6 and its capabilities. In doing so, I’ve discovered I don’t know nor can I find what tolerances it has for contrast ratios. My references date to film when one could say film x has a contrast ratio of 100 – 1, whereas film y is limited to 10 – 1. One could interpret this to mean that if in film y, you exceeded the 10 – 1 contrast limits, you could expect problems with your photograph, and would need to either reduce the contrast or use film x. I am certain similar rules apply to the digital sensors.
I have heard that most digital cameras can handle about 5 f stops and be in the safe contrast range. Is this correct? In any case (correct or not) can someone express the limits of contrast tolerable for a G6?
I know there are countless ways to change the contrasts getting to the camera and/or deal with them in editing, but what should be the goal if I wish to take full advantage of the camera’s capabilities in this respect?
Thanks,
Jim

5 stops seems to be the range most digital cameras can handle. The G6 histogram should have lines for those five stops.

Read this and use it, especially in RAW mode:
